COLUMBUS, Ohio – Top-ranked Ohio State continues to roll as the Buckeyes dispatched Boise State 4-0 on Sunday afternoon to win the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Columbus.
Ohio State improves to 6-0 on the season, sweeping all six matches. Boise State fell for the first time this season and is now 3-1.
The win sends the Buckeyes to the ITA Indoor Team National Championship next month in New York. This is the 15th the Buckeyes have advanced to the final site, and they have won the national title in 2014 and 2019.
As they have this whole first week, the Buckeyes breezed through the doubles point. The only drama came at the end as Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy were racing Robert Cash and Bryce Nakashima to see which team would finish first. Following Justin Boulais and Andrew Lutschaunig's 6-1 win on court one, the other two Buckeye teams were serving up 5-4 and both were up 40-0. Cash and Nakashima finished their point just ahead of Kingsley's serve.
Leading 1-0, the Buckeyes won five of the first sets and would get wins on courts two, five and six to clinch the match. Alexander Bernard was the first done, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Idriss Haddouch. Preston Stearns followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory and then Justin Boulais added the final point with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The Buckeyes remain at home for a huge weekend next weekend. They will host defending national champion and No. 3 Virginia on Friday night at 6 p.m. and will then host No. 17 Wake Forest on Sunday at 11 a.m. The following Sunday, Feb 11, the Buckeyes will host No. 2 South Carolina.
