Five different players record goals as Ohio State improves to 6-1 on the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State field hockey team got back to its winning ways on Sunday afternoon, and did so using a familiar formula. The Buckeyes erupted for four second-quarter goals and cruised to a 6-0 victory over Stanford. It was Ohio State's sixth win in seven games to begin the 2023 campaign. Stanford is now 1-4 on the year.
The Short Story
Five different players had goals on Sunday, led by freshman Brenna Bough, who scored twice in a two-minute span during a 4-0 second-quarter run. Cameryn Forgash, Makenna Webster, Cam Standish and Leanne Bough also got into the scoring column.
Ohio State's offense generated 20 shots and allowed just four by Stanford. It marked the third consecutive game that the Buckeye defense has held its opponent to 10 six shots or fewer. In goal, Abby Danson played 54:07 and made two saves before giving way to Kelly Davis, who finished out the final 5:13 and didn't face a shot.
How The Goals Were Scored
- After a scoreless first quarter, the Buckeyes offense kicked into high gear in the second quarter and found the back of the cage four times in a five minute span.
- It started at the 16:46 mark when Forgash tipped in a shot from Julie Rodijk into the right side of the goal. Less than a minute later, Brenna Bough redirected a Webster shot to push the lead to 2-0.
- Bough's backhanded shot over a Stanford defender and goalkeeper Daisy Ford made the score 3-0 at 19:03 and then Webster went to work with an unassisted tally in which she worked around the goalkeeper and hit a backhanded shot into a vacated goal. It was her team-leading eight score of the season.
- Second-half scoring came from Standish, who registered her first career goal when she collected a rebound off a Webster shot. Bough closed the score in the 54th minute when she coverted a penalty corner off assists from Claudia Thomas and Standish.
