Engle Named B1G Athlete of the Week
- For the fifth time in her career, Addie Engel has been named Big Ten Athlete of the Week. The Springfield, Ohio, native won the season-opening meet and led the Buckeyes to the team title last Friday in Dayton.
- She finished in 16:58.1, nearly 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher (17:28.7). Her time in the 5K was a personal best, passing the 17:23.5 she finished the same race in a season ago while also winning that race.
- Engel has placed in the Top 16 in 14 of her last 15 races, with the lone exception when she ran as an individual at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Since that race, she has placed in the Top 2 of seven of eight races, with the eighth a 10th-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors.
- No new rankings were released this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), with the next national rankings slated for Sept. 19. In the preseason poll, the Buckeye women were 16th. It is the second-highest ranking in program history after last year's team ended the 2022 campaign a school-best 15th nationally.
- The women, who started the year ranked second in the region behind national No. 4 Notre Dame, have been in the Top 25 since the third set of rankings last season. In all, four Big Ten women's squads are ranked to start the year, with the Buckeyes joined by No. 17 Michigan State, No. 18 Wisconsin and No. 25 Michigan.
- The Buckeyes swept the team titles at the Mike Baumer Cross Country Classic hosted by Wright State at Fairborn Community Park in Fairborn, Ohio, last Friday evening, in their first competition of the season. Led by women's race winner Addie Engel, all five Buckeye counters for both the men and women placed in the Top 11 of the 5k events.
- Freshmen Lilly Eckels, Zoee Lehman and Olivia Oiler and senior Amelia Figler made their cross country debuts for the Ohio State women, along with freshmen Liam Shaughnessy and Will McGraw and sophomore transfer Zach Beneteau for the men.
- The women will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Invitational Sept. 23, allowing an early look at the home of the 2023 NCAA Championships, set for Nov. 18.
- The remaining regular season races are the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago Sept. 29 and the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas, Oct. 13.
- The men and women will head back to Madison, Wis., for the Big Ten Championships Oct. 17 and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Nov. 10.
