COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team earned its first win of the season with a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 4 Colgate Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y. Senior forward Jenna Buglioni recorded the game-winning goal 2:32 into the overtime period to send the Buckeyes (1-1-0) past the Raiders (1-1-0).
How it Happened
- Ohio State set the tone immediately, tallying six shots in the first minute and a half. At the first period media timeout at 11:29, the Buckeyes had put eight shots on goal while holding Colgate to zero.
- Sloane Matthews put Ohio State on the board at 11:41 with the first play following the timeout. The Buckeyes won the faceoff and Kenzie Hauswirth skated the puck behind the Colgate net and sent it out to Hadley Hartmetz at the blue line. Hartmetz found Matthews in front of the Raiders' goaltender Hannah Murphy and the sophomore forward redirected the pass into the bottom right corner of the Colgate goal.
- Kiara Zanon extended the Buckeye lead to two with a power play goal at 1:18 into the second period. Emma Peschel sent the puck across the slot to Zanon, who was waiting on the back post of the Colgate goal to tap it behind Murphy. Cayla Barnes added the second assist.
- After two periods, Ohio State was outshooting Colgate 60-34 with 32 shots on goal.
- Colgate tied the game with a two-goal third period, scoring in the first two and last two minutes of the period to send the game to extra time.
- Jenna Buglioni's game-winning goal came just after the halfway mark of the overtime period. She and Hauswirth teamed up to recover the puck in the neutral zone on the boards in front of the Buckeye bench. Buglioni skated it into the Colgate zone and was one-on-one with Murphy, finishing glove-side high for the final tally.
- Raygan Kirk earned the start in goal for the Buckeyes, making 31 saves on the day, including multiple sliding and one-on-one stops, to help secure the Buckeyes' win.
- Jenna Buglioni's overtime game-winner is her second of her career and sixth game-winning goal of her career. Last season, Buglioni scored Ohio State's overtime goal against Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 21, 2022) to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 win. It is her second game-winning goal against Colgate; she scored the third goal in Ohio State's 6-2 victory over the Raiders last season.
- Splitting the season opening series, both Ohio State and Colgate earned their wins with a 3-2 score. In each game of the series, the victorious team led 2-0 before going on to win, 3-2.
- Sloane Matthews scored the Buckeyes' first goals of each game of the series. She has scored two goals in a series once before, tallying a goal in each game of Ohio State's 2022-23 home opener against St. Cloud State (Oct. 7-8, 2022).
- Kiara Zanon tallied her first goal as a Buckeye and the team's first power play goal of the year. The goal is her ninth on the power play for her career.
- Cayla Barnes also recorded her first point as a Buckeye with an assist on Zanon's goal. Barnes, a graduate from Eastvale, Calif., has now recorded 56 career assists.
- Senior goaltender Raygan Kirk made her 16th start of her Ohio State career in Saturday's game. She earned her ninth win as a Buckeye to improve to 36-15-3 for her career.
