Buckeyes Take Down No. 16 Indiana 2-1
9/28/2023 10:08:00 PM | General, Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State scored a pair of first half goals and took down No. 16, and previously unbeaten, Indiana 2-1 on Thursday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.
The win lifts the Buckeyes to 6-3-2 overall on the season and 2-1-1 in Big Ten play. The loss was the first of the year for Indiana who is now 9-1-2 and 3-1-0.
Emma Sears assisted on both of the goals, setting up junior Kailyn Dudukovich on the first and then sophomore Ella Giannola on the second. The Buckeyes held Indiana scoreless for nearly 80 minutes before the Hoosiers put together a frantic final 10 minutes.
How it Happened
It wasn't the prettiest of first halves, but the Buckeyes took advantage of an opportunity in the 23rd minute. Sears whipped a ball across the box that hit an Indiana defender and the ball found the foot of Dudukovich who calmed knocked-home her eighth goal of the season.
In the 37th minute, Sears again found herself with the ball deep down the right side of the box. She made a very classy move to get around an Indiana defender and then connected with Giannola on a perfect pass in the middle of the box. Giannola then beat the IU keeper and the Buckeyes were in front 2-0. The goal was the third of the season for Giannola.
The score remained that way until the 80th minute when Indiana scored off a corner kick to cut the lead in half. IU pushed hard but the Buckeyes were able to withstand the charge.
Molly Pritchard made four saves but also had a handful of nice plays on crossing balls in the box.
Up Next
The Buckeyes will look to keep the momentum rolling as they welcome Illinois to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on Sunday. Kickoff is set for noon. It's Pink Day for the program and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
