2023 PWHL Draft Notes - Ohio State
- Jaques became the first Ohio State player drafted to the PWHL as Boston took her in the second round with the 10th overall pick. The historic feat is no surprise as Jaques reached numerous firsts during her Ohio State career, including becoming the Buckeyes' first Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winner and Ohio State's first Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar of the Year.Â
- Ohio State had its first two draftees picked back-to-back, with Maltais going 11th to her hometown team of Toronto. She was just the fourth forward picked in the draft.
- Of the 29 defensemen selected in Monday's draft, four were Buckeyes. Joining Jaques were Dunne (picked 17th by Ottawa), Bizal (picked 43rd by Montreal) and Tuominen (picked 84th by Minnesota).
- Natalie Spooner and Maltais, who won World Championship gold in 2021 and 2022 and Olympic gold in 2022 together for Team Canada, team up again for the PWHL's Toronto team. Spooner was selected 23rd overall.
- Schepers, who started her professional career in Minnesota, continues her career in her home state with the Minnesota team drafting her in the 13th round with the 73rd pick.
- A Buckeye has been drafted to each of the six PWHL teams. Minnesota has the most Ohio State players on its roster with three – DeGeorge (36th), Schepers and Tuominen.
- Half of Ohio State's draft picks – Bizal, DeGeorge, Jaques, Levis (57th, New York) and Schepers – were members of the 2021-22 national championship team.
- Eight of Ohio State's draftees were played under head coach Nadine Muzerall. Dunne, Maltais and Skaggs (82nd, Boston) were members of the first Ohio State team, under the direction of second-year head coach Muzerall, to earn an NCAA Tournament bid and advance to the Frozen Four.
- Also in attendance at Monday's draft was Ohio State Athletics Hall of Famer Tessa Bonhomme ('08), who is an anchor for TSN and hosted the draft.
