
Buckeyes Open Fall Campaign at Furman

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's tennis team will be competing in the 36th Annual Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic this weekend to start its fall season. The tournament will run Friday through Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

Joining the Buckeyes in the individual tournament will be host Furman, No. 62 Alabama, No. 17 Auburn, No. 45 Clemson, No. 11 Duke, No. 2 Georgia, No. 20 Georgia Tech, No. 68 Indiana, Mississippi State, No. 4 N.C. State, No. 33 South Carolina, No. 14 Tennessee, and No. 27 Wake Forest. (Numbers listed are the final 2023 team rankings; Ohio State was No. 10.)

Play begins at 9 a.m. each day and includes 10 singles flights and five doubles flights. Two rounds of doubles and one round of singles will be held Friday, Saturday includes a round of doubles followed by a round of singles and Sunday will be one singles round.

In the Rankings
The Buckeyes have seven returning players - graduate students Irina Cantos Siemers and Akansha Bhan, senior Madeline Atway, juniors Shelly Bereznyak, Sydni Ratliff and Dani Schoenly and sophomore Megan Basil. The squad was 22-7 on the year, finished second in the Big Ten and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the ninth straight time. The Buckeyes hosted first and second round NCAA matches and reached the Round of 16.

The New Buckeyes
This season, the Buckeyes have added four new freshmen to their roster - Alessia Cau, Teah Chavez, Luciana Perry and Audrey Spencer. Cau is from Vancouver, British Colombia, and has won an ITF junior singles title as well as four ITF junior doubles titles. Also from Canada is Teah Chavez, a native of Regina, Saskatchewan, who has played for Team Canada and is ranked in the Top 10 in Canada. Luciana Perry, from Export, Pa., was a blue chip recruit and ranked first in Pennsylvania. Joining Perry as a blue chip recruit is Audrey Spencer, who has been ranked in the Top 10 nationally and has been No. 1 in Kansas in 18s.

Select Buckeyes will travel to Cary, N.C., to participate in the College Ranked Spotlight, set for Sept. 21-24.

- In the ITA preseason rankings, the Buckeyes have three ranked singles players and two ranked doubles teams.
- Irina Cantos Siemers is 16th, followed by juniors Sydni Ratliff at 27th and Shelly Bereznyak at 69th.
- In doubles, Cantos Siemers and Ratliff are ranked No. 14, followed by the Cantos Siemers and Akanksha Bhan team at No. 57.
- Freshman Luciana Perry begins her collegiate career ranked 10th on the freshman/newcomer list.
- Irina Cantos Siemers has been named captain for the 2023-24 season, Buckeye head coach Melissa Schaub announced.
- Cantos Siemers, a fifth-year senior who earned her undergraduate degree last December, is the reigning Big Ten Athlete of the Year and a two-time singles All-American. A three-time unanimous All-Big Ten selection, Cantos Siemers became the sixth Buckeye to earn All-America status in singles in 2001 and repeated the honor in 2022, making her just the second two-time All-American in program history. Her overall record with Ohio State is 96-36 in singles and 78-52 in doubles. The native of Brussels, Belgium, has been ranked in the singles Top 30 the majority of the last three seasons, reaching a high of No. 4.
- She starts this season ranked 16th in singles and ranked in doubles with two partners, coming in at No. 14 with Sydni Ratliff and No. 57 with Akanksha Bhan.
- Cantos Siemers is also the second Buckeye to earn CSC First Team Academic All-America accolades. She earned her bachelor's degree in communications in December 2022 and is now working toward a master's degree in sports management/kinesiology. She is a four-time ITA and Ohio State Scholar-Athlete as well as a three-time Academic All-Big Ten recipient and two-time B1G Distinguished Scholar.Â
