Ohio State is defending meet team champion
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2023 campaign Friday evening in the Mike Baumer Cross Country Classic hosted by Wright State at Fairborn Community Park in Fairborn, Ohio. Both races will be a 5k, with the men slated to start at 6 p.m. and the women's race to follow at 6:45 p.m.

- In the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason poll released this week, the Buckeye women are 16th. It is the second-highest ranking in program history after last year's team ended the 2022 campaign a school-best 15th nationally.
- The women, who start the year ranked second in the region behind national No. 4 Notre Dame, have been in the Top 25 since the third set of rankings last season. In all, four Big Ten women's squads are ranked to start the year, with the Buckeyes joined by No. 17 Michigan State, No. 18 Wisconsin and No. 25 Michigan.
- This is the second year in a row Ohio State is kicking off its season at the Mike Baumer Cross Country Classic. Last year both the men and women won the team titles at the event. The women took six of the Top 7 spots and the men had five in the Top 12.
- The women return nine of 11 runners from last year's Big Ten Championships – Annie Allen, Sam Coleman, Addie Engel, Andrea Kuhn, Gia Napoleon, Sydney Paul, Daniella Santos, Morgan Schmitt and Akemi Von Scherr. The women finished second at the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships, where they went on to finish a program-best 15th.
- Engel is the defending Big Ten cross country champion and earned All-America accolades after a 10th-place finish at the NCAA meet. She was joined on the All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes Region teams by Andrea Kuhn and Daniella Santos.
- The Ohio State men return eight of the 11 men who ran in the 2022 Big Ten Championships – Colby Adams, Sean Carney, Giovanni Copploe, John Cuozzo, Zubin Jha, Kaleb Martin, Ivan Slyepkan and Keegan Souhan.
- Both the men and women will head to Madison, Wis., for the Badger Classic Sept. 9. Wisconsin will also host the Big Ten Championships Oct. 17 and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Nov. 10.
- The women will travel to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Invitational Sept. 23, allowing an early look at the home of the 2023 NCAA Championships, set for Nov. 18.
- The remaining regular season races are the Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago Sept. 29 and the Texas A&M Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas, Oct. 13.
