No. 14 Buckeyes Beat Falcons in Gritty Five-Setter

Ohio State prevailed against Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon in the NKU Tournament.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0) earned a gritty five-set win (25-20, 15-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-7) against Bowling Green (1-1) on Saturday afternoon in the team's second match of the tournament hosted by Northern Kentucky.
Ohio State won a back-and-forth first set by a 25-20 margin, scoring the final six points of the set. Bowling Green evened the match with a 25-15 win in the second set, scoring the final seven points of the set. OSU started strong in the third but BG used a challenge win in a late comeback to take the lead with a 25-23 set win. The Buckeyes evened the match and forced a fifth set with a 25-16 win in the fourth set.
Emily Londot was the first in the match to record her 10th kills, doing so before the midway point of the second set and finishing with 26 kills – her first 20-kill match of the season. Mia Tuman recorded the Buckeyes' first double-double of the season with 55 assists and 14 digs. Sydney Taylor led the Buckeye defense by tying her career-high 15 digs. Grace Egan (12) and Chelsea Thorpe (16) each reached 10 kills for the first time in their collegiate careers. Egan added 10 digs for her first career double-double, while Londot added 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
How it Happened
Bowling Green scored the opening point but Ohio State responded with the next four to take an early lead until the Falcons tied the set at eight and took the lead back at 10-9. The teams traded points before three-consecutive OSU scores gave the Buckeyes a 15-12 advantage at the media timeout. Ohio State extended its lead to 16-12 out of the media timeout but Bowling Green was able to tie the set at 18. BG took a 20-19 lead to force an OSU timeout, but the Buckeyes scored the next three points to force a Falcons timeout. OSU won the set by a 25-20 mark after scoring the final six points, capped by Londot's seventh kill of the set.
The Falcons scored first again in the second set as the teams traded small runs early in another tight set. Bowling Green took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout after three-unanswered points. BG extended its lead to 18-14 to force an OSU timeout. Four-consecutive points by the Falcons extended their lead to 22-15, prompting a second Buckeyes timeout. Bowling Green won the set by a 25-15 margin after scoring the final seven points.
Ohio State scored the first two points of the third set and took an early 5-1 lead to force a Bowling Green timeout. A 4-0 OSU run extended the Buckeyes' lead to 11-5 on a pair of back-to-back kills from Chelsea Thorpe. Ohio State called timeout after three unanswered Bowling Green points trimmed the Buckeyes' lead to 12-9. The Falcons got as close as 12-11 and then called timeout trailing 16-12. BG regained the lead with the next six points, forcing an OSU timeout trailing 18-16. The Buckeyes responded with the next four points to take a 20-18 lead on an ace from Grace Egan. The Falcons tied the set again at 21 and won a challenge to tie the set at 22, going on to win 25-23.

The Buckeyes didn't allow back-to-back Falcon points for the second half of the set and scored five of the final six points to earn the 25-16 set win and force a fifth set.
Londot opened the fifth set with another kill before Bowling Green won its second challenge of the match to even the score at two. A trio of BG errors gave OSU a 5-2 advantage. Kills from Londot and Egan forced a Bowling Green timeout with Ohio State leading by a 7-4 margin. The Falcons trimmed the Buckeyes' lead to one out of the timeout. BG called another timeout as OSU pushed the lead to 11-7 with a trio of kills. The Buckeyes scored the final seven points to close out the fifth set, 15-7.
