COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team finished 12th at the 2023 NCAA Championships in Pennsauken, N.J. Sunday with 71 total points.
Ohio State boats earned two top-12 finishes with petite final appearances. The Second Varsity Eight placed eighth nationally and the First Varsity Four took 12th. The First Varsity Eight won the C Final to take the No. 13 spot.
In the team’s final race of the national championship regatta, Ohio State’s 2V8 charged to a second-place finish in the petite final of the boat class to earn the team’s best finish and contribute 30 points towards the team total. The Buckeyes finished in a time of 6:37.277, just 1.214 seconds behind first-place Brown. The team’s No. 8 finish overall ties its result from last year and marks the 11th consecutive NCAA Championship that the boat has finished top-10 nationally.
The Buckeyes’ 1V8 battled from behind to win the C Final and finish 13th overall. Indiana clocked the fastest time to the 500m mark with Ohio State in third a quarter of the way through the course. But the Buckeyes made a push around 800m to pass both the Hoosiers and Duke to take over the lead. The boat finished in a time of 6:29.568, a second and a half ahead of second-place Duke, and earned 30 points towards the team’s final score.
The 1V4 closed out its season with a sixth-place result in the petite final to add 11 points for the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes crossed the finish line in a time of 7:29.421. The boat matched its No. 12 seed earned entering the championships.
Ohio State earned earned the second-highest finish among Big Ten programs at the national championship regatta. This year’s event marked the Buckeyes’ 23rd NCAA Championship appearance.
