Buckeyes Fall in B1G Tournament Quarterfinals to No. 12 Terps

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end, falling to No. 12 Maryland, 11-7, in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in College Park, Md. The Buckeyes were within two (8-6) entering the final quarter but a Maryland three-goal run put the game out of reach for Ohio State (5-12).
The Terps (13-5) advance to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals. Ohio State will host the semifinals at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday and the final at 8 p.m. Saturday in Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. No. 2 seed Maryland will be joined by No. 1 Northwestern, No. 4 Michigan and No. 6 Rutgers. Tickets are available HERE.
Caly O'Brien had a hat trick to lead the Buckeyes offensively against the Terrapins, while Regan Alexander had 11 saves in the Buckeye cage. Jamie Level scored twice and Jamie Lasda had two points with a goal and an assist.
How it Happened
- Maryland scored the game's first two goals at 14:08 and 13:37.
- Ohio State tied the game with back-to-back tallies. Casey Roberts set up Jamie Lasda at 8:10 and Annie Hargraves converted a free position chance at 6:47.
- Three Terp goals before the end of the quarter put Maryland ahead 5-2 through 15 minutes.
- Each team scored two goals in the second, with Maryland answering a Buckeye tally twice to maintain its three-goal edge.
- Lasda found a cutting Caly O'Brien at 11:31 and Maryland responded less than a minute later.
- At 4:35 a free position goal from Jamie Level made it a two-goal game (6-4). Maryland pushed the lead back to three on a goal with 2:26 left in the first half and carried the 7-4 advantage into halftime.
- Ohio State scored two of the three goals in the third quarter.
- O'Brien converted a free position chance at 13:54 and Maryland's Libby May tallied on a chance of her own at 12:29. The final goal of the quarter was also scored by O'Brien, as Nicole Ferrara found her right in front for a goal with less than five seconds on the shot clock. Maryland led 8-6 through three quarters.
- Neither team scored again until the 8:31 mark of the fourth. A Maryland player-up goal ended a scoreless streak for the Terps of 18:58 and pushed the lead to 9-6. Maryland added two more, at 6:29 and 2:15, to stretch its advantage.
- Level tallied unassisted with 41 seconds left for the 11-7 final. Her goal ended a scoreless streak of 24:20 for Ohio State.
- For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 33-20.
- Regan Alexander made 11 saves for the Buckeyes, her 10th outing with double-digit saves this season. She now has 303 career saves, ranking sixth in school history. Her 167 saves this campaign are the seventh-most in a single season for a Buckeye goalie. The Terps' goalie made 10 stops.
- The Buckeyes had the edge in ground balls, 17-15, while Maryland claimed the majority of draw controls (19-3).
- Ohio State had fewer turnovers, 11-15, and had eight caused turnovers to Maryland's five. O'Brien and Bryce Pfundstein each had two caused turnovers for the Buckeyes.
- Lasda ends the season as the Buckeyes' leading scorer with 30 assists and 57 points, the first Buckeye to hit the 30-point mark since 2016. Ferrara is second with 51 points, with a team-high 38 goals. O'Brien had a team-best 45 draw controls and Alexander was first in ground balls (46) and caused turnovers (17).
