COLUMBUS, Ohio – Postseason play has arrived, and No. 25 Ohio State will head to New Jersey this weekend for the Big Ten Championship. The tournament is being played at the Galloway National Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. The 54-hole event opens on Friday morning and a champion will be crowned on Sunday afternoon.
- Ohio State’s lineup will consist of graduates JonErik Alford and Neal Shipley, senior Jackson Chandler and juniors Maxwell Moldovan and Adam Wallin. Freshman Jacob Tarkany will be the team’s alternate this week.
- The Buckeyes have won the Big Ten Tournament 23 times, but not since 2004. Individually, 18 Buckeyes have claimed medalist honors. Howard Baker (1945, 1947) and John Cook (1978, 1979) each won the title twice.
- According to this week’s latest Golfstat rankings, Ohio State is ranked No. 25. That is second in the Big Ten behind No. 3 Illinois.
- Ohio State is coming off its second tournament title of the year, winning the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate by 19 shots. The Buckeyes also won the Cal Poly Collegiate at the end of the fall and have six Top 5 finishes on the year.
- Jackson Chandler finished runner-up at the Kepler following rounds of 70-71-72. That was the first runner-up finish of his career. He was also second in the field for the weekend with 12 birdies. On the year, Chandler is averaging a career-best 72.52 over nine events.
- Maxwell Moldovan, who was named to the Palmer Cup team this week, leads the team in scoring at 70.53. He has eight Top 10 finishes in 10 events this season and has posted 23 of 30 rounds at par or better. The All-American has finished in the Top 15 in each of his first two Big Ten Tournaments.
- JonErik Alford is having the best year of his career and is currently second on the team in scoring at a career-best 72.21. He posted the low round on the team in each of the final two rounds at the Kepler last weekend, carding a 3-under 68 in round two and an even-par 71 in cool, breezy conditions in round three. He is tied for second on the team with a career-high six rounds in the 60s this season.
- Neal Shipley is coming off his best finish as a Buckeye, as he finished tied for seventh at the Kepler. He opened with a pair of even-par rounds before posting a 75 in the final round. The James Madison transfer has played in all 10 stroke-play events this season and is averaging 72.87. He also leads the team with six eagles on the year.
- Adam Wallin got back on track last weekend as he finished fifth at the Kepler after rounds of 69-72-74 (+2). He has three Top 10s on the year, including a win at the Cal Poly Invitational. He fired a final round 70 and finished 16th at the 2021 Big Ten Championship as a freshman.
- The weather forecast doesn’t look ideal for the weekend with temperatures in the 60s and a chance of rain each day.
