COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will close the regular season this weekend by hosting the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at the OSU Golf Club. This will be the 51st playing of the tournament. The three-day event will start on Friday and conclude on Sunday afternoon. Admission and parking are free all weekend.
- Ohio State will have a pair of teams competing this weekend. The lineup for the A team will feature Adam Wallin, Maxwell Moldovan, JonErik Alford, Neal Shipley and Jackson Chandler. The B team will be made up of Patrick Schmucking, Jacob Tarkany, Joe Wilson IV, Topher Reed and Tyler Groomes. Drew Mulcahy will also play as an individual.
- The tournament is named for the late Robert Kepler, who served as Ohio State’s golf coach from 1938 until 1965.
- Since its inception, the Kepler has been won by only a dozen schools – Colorado, Eastern Michigan, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Illinois, Kent State, Louisville, Miami (Ohio), Northwestern, Ohio State, UNLV and Xavier.
- The Buckeyes have hoisted the tournament champion trophy 24 times in the 50-year history, including six-consecutive victories from 1974-79 and nine-consecutive from 1981-1989.
- Ohio State has finished in the Top 6 at each of its last of last seven events and has been under-par in the last five tournaments.
- Maxwell Moldovan is the defending individual champion as he shot rounds of 68-69-68 (-11) to win the event by two shots. Last year’s tournament was played at the Columbus Country Club as the OSU Golf Club prepared to host an NCAA Regional.
- Ohio State traveled to Atlanta last weekend to take on Georgia Tech in a match play event. The Buckeyes fell to Tech 5-3, collecting wins from Wallin, Schmucking and Groomes.
- Moldovan continues to lead the team in scoring at 70.33. His next birdie will be his 100th of the season and he currently has a program record 33 rounds in the 60s.
- JonErik Alford is still second on the team in scoring at a career-best 72.33. Jackson Chandler is also averaging a career-best this season as he has a 72.71 scoring averaging through eight events.
- Neal Shipley tied for the low round of the day in the most-recent stroke play event as he carded a 3-under 69 in the final round of the Calusa Cup in Naples, Fla., on April 4. That was his third round in the 60s this season.
- It wouldn’t be a Robert Kepler Intercollegiate without some rough weather in the forecast. Rain is predicted for Friday evening and will last until Saturday morning. The teams will play as much golf as they can over the first two days as the final round may start on Saturday evening.
