Buckeyes Trample Nittany Lions, Remain Perfect in Big Ten

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s men’s tennis team played outside at the Auer Tennis Complex for the first time this season against the visiting Nittany Lions of Penn State on Saturday. The Buckeyes improved to 7-0 in the Big Ten with a 4-0 victory.
Ohio State was led by senior Cannon Kingsley who finished the day 2-0. Redshirt freshman Jack Anthrop added a singles win, and true freshman Alexander Bernard clinched the match with a victory of his own.
Ohio State is now 15-0 at home this season and will continue its Big Ten regular season schedule with two home matchups next weekend against Purdue on Friday evening and Indiana on Sunday afternoon.
Doubles
- It would only take 29 minutes to secure the doubles point as the Buckeyes worked quickly on courts one and three. Both courts finished within a minute of each other.
- The No.7-ranked pair of Andrew Lutschaunig and JJ Tracy would finish first on court one with a 6-2 victory over Sam Bossem and Loren Byers. The two are now 10-1 as a pair overall.
- James Trotter and Kingsley won 6-3 over Charl Morgan and Pranav Nemani. The two leaned on their strong serves and forehands to overpower the Nittany Lions.
- Buckeye’s Robert Cash and Justin Boulais match against Miko Eala and Stefan Simeunovic would go unfinished, but the Buckeyes were in control of the pace, leading 4-2.
Singles
- Jack Anthrop finished first for the Buckeyes on court six with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over Andrei Padurar. Anthrop won eleven straight games and now improves to 16-3 overall.
- No. 18-ranked Kingsley broke Byers early in the first set to take a 2-0 lead and controlled the rest of the first to win it 6-2. In the second, Kingsley worked his way to a 6-3 win to secure the second singles victory for the Buckeyes.
- Bernard would finish next on court five, breaking a 4-4 tie with Simeunovic then holding serve to win the first set 6-4. Bernard used that momentum to secure a 6-3 second set victory.
- Tracy, the No. 13-ranked player in the country, started his match against Eala with a break and held serve to lead 2-0 and pushed his lead to 5-0 in the first set. Tracy would eventually win the set 6-4 and lead in the second 5-3, but the match would go unfinished.
- Boulais and Cash’s matches would go unfinished for the second time on Sunday. Boulais utilized his serve to win the first set in a tiebreak by a score of 7-6(3). The second set was just as close, with Boulais leading 4-3 at the match’s conclusion.
Up Next
- Ohio State will host Purdue on Friday at 6:00 pmat the Ty Tucker Tennis Center, followed by another home match against Indiana on Sunday at noon. Neither Purdue nor Indiana has won a matchup with a Big Ten team this season.
