
Seniors Shine in Senior Day Win Over St. Thomas

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the final regular season home game of the 2022-23 season, the No. 1/2 Ohio State women’s hockey team shutout St. Thomas with a 5-0 win Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink. With the win, the Buckeyes (27-3-2, 22-3-1 WCHA) earned the regular season series sweep of the Tommies (8-23-1, 3-22-1 WCHA).
How it Happened
- The day started with a celebration of the Buckeyes’ 2023 senior class. Seniors Brooke Bink, Jenn Gardiner Teagan Grant, Kenzie Hauswirth, Handley Hartmetz, Quinn Kuntz, Ramsey Parent and sixth-year Emma Maltais were all recognized prior to the game.
- Kuntz earned the senior day start in goal for the Buckeyes. She posted 17 saves on the day to earn the shutout win.
- Graduate forward Paetyn Levis put the Buckeyes on the board on their first power play of the weekend. With under 40 seconds to play with the extra skater advantage, she found the back of the net at 3:52 into the game off assists from Hauswirth and Maltais.
- Gabby Rosenthal added her fourth goal in as many games, scoring at 10:51 in the first period. Jenna Buglioni and Gardiner tallied the assists on the goal.
- Gardiner got in on the scoring party, recording the team’s first goal of the second period at 3:36. She was assisted by Sophie Jaques and Buglioni.
- Makenna Webster and Maltais teamed up to record Ohio State’s fourth goal of the day. Webster stripped a St. Thomas skater of the puck in the Tommies’ zone and connected on a give-and-go with Maltais before lighting the lamp at 9:18 in the second period.
- Capping the day off in spectacular fashion was a goal from Teagan Grant. The senior forward recorded her first career goal with just 6:04 left in the game. Gardiner and Rosenthal added the assists.
- Overall, the Buckeyes outshot the Tommies 51-17 on the day and finished 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
Game Notes
- Teagan Grant’s first career goal is her second point of the season. She now has recorded seven points for her career.
- In goal for the Buckeyes, Kuntz earned her third shutout of the season and of her career on Saturday. She posted a career-high 17 saves to remain undefeated with five wins for her Buckeye career.
- Four of Ohio State’s goals were scored by senior or fifth-year members of the team. Levis and Rosenthal, both graduate students, scored the first goals of the game. Gardiner and Grant scored the third and fifth goals, respectively.
- Ohio State is now 22-3-1 in conference play this season. The Buckeyes’ 22 WCHA wins are a program record.
- With the shutout of the Tommies, Ohio State has scored nine unanswered goals in the last five periods of play.
- Sophie Jaques added an assist on the day, bringing her career total to 92 for her career. She is now tied for third in program history in career assists.
- Ohio State scored its NCAA leading 29th power play goal of the season on Saturday. The Buckeyes are .333 on the power play this season.
- Saturday’s shutout is the team’s eighth of the year.
