Buckeyes Skate to Tie, Shootout Win vs. No. 10/9 Minnesota

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team tied No. 10/9 Minnesota, 1-1 in overtime, Saturday in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes then picked up the extra point in the Big Ten standings with a 1-0 shootout win in three rounds.

Cam Thiesing put the Buckeyes on the board early in the first and the Gophers tied the game midway through the second. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Buckeye freshman goalie Kristoffer Eberly, in his first career start, stopped 23-of-24 Gopher shots through regulation and overtime. Ohio State had 30 shots in the game, including all five shots on goal in the overtime period. In the shootout, Davis Burnside scored the lone goal in the first round. Eberly did not allow a goal, forcing the first shot off target before back-to-back saves.

The game closed the first part of the season for the Buckeyes (5-8-4, 0-8-2, 0-0-2 B1G) and Gophers (9-5-4, 5-4-3, 1-0-0 B1G).

How it Happened
- Cam Thiesing opened the scoring at 3:33. After hard work by the Buckeyes in the Gopher zone, he forced a turnover and scored from the high slot.
- The Gophers tied the game at 10:05 of the second, when Aaron Huglen scored on a partial breakaway.
- Neither team was able to score the rest of the way.
- The Buckeyes ended the game with 30 shots on goal, with 10 in both the second and third periods and five in overtime.
- Minnesota had 24 shots through 65 minutes, with Kristoffer Eberly stopping 23. Minnesota had seven shots in the first and second periods and 10 in the third.
- The Buckeyes blocked 14 Gopher shot attempts, led by Scooter Brickey, Stephen Halliday and Patrick Guzzo with two each. Minnesota had 11 shot blocks.
- There were just three penalties called in the game. Ohio State had two power play chances, Minnesota one.
- In the shootout, Minnesota shot first. After the Gophers' first attempt went wide, Davis Burnside converted for the Buckeyes. Neither team scored in round two, with both goalies making a save. Eberly had a save on the Gopher shot in round three to secure the shootout win.Â
