Buckeye Defense Stands Tall in 73-49 Win Against Grand Valley State

Ohio State totaled a season-high 22 steals and forced a season-high 32 turnovers in the victory.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12/11 Ohio State Buckeyes (9-1, 1-0 B1G) beat Grand Valley State (7-1, 1-0 GLIAC) on Friday evening inside Value City Arena by a 73-49 margin.
Ohio State used an 11-0 run in the first quarter to build a 24-11 lead after 10 minutes. The Buckeyes outscored the Lakers 19-8 in the second quarter to extend the lead to 43-19 at halftime. Scoring was even through the second half as the Buckeyes closed the game on top 73-49.
Jacy Sheldon (15) and Taylor Thierry (11) both reached double figures in the second quarter as they shot a collective 12-of-13 from the floor during the game. The Buckeye defense totaled a season-best 22 steals and forced a season-high 32 turnovers.
How it Happened
Rebeka Mikulášiková opened scoring with a pair of free throws as the Buckeyes held the Lakers without a shot for more than two minutes. Ohio State held an 8-7 lead at the media timeout after back-to-back GVSU baskets. The Buckeyes used an 11-0 run to build a 19-7 lead with 2:37 to play in the quarter. OSU led by a 24-11 mark after 10 minutes.
Celeste Taylor started the second quarter with a fastbreak layup before GVSU got onto the board. The Buckeyes strung together eight unanswered points midway through the quarter to extend the lead to 39-17 with 4:37 to play in the half. OSU ended the half with the final four points to take a 43-19 lead into the locker room.
Cotie McMahon scored the Buckeyes' first four points of the second half and back-to-back OSU jumpers gave Ohio State a 53-26 lead midway through the quarter. The Buckeyes ended the quarter with back-to-back jumpers, including Madison Greene's first basket after returning to injury, to claim a 61-32 lead after 30 minutes.
GVSU scored the first four points of the final quarter before Rikki Harris converted a three-point play. The teams traded free throws as the OSU defense held GVSU without a basket for nearly five minutes. Scoring was capped with a layup from Karla Vres as the Buckeyes won by a 73-49 margin.
Highlights
Ohio State hosts No. 2/2 UCLA on Monday for a 6:30 p.m. ET tip-off. The game will be broadcast on FS1 and AM1460. Fans are asked to wear white.

- This is the seventh game of the season that Ohio State has totaled at least 10 steals. The Buckeyes finished with a season-best 22 steals after totaling 14 in the first half.
- The last time the Buckeyes totaled at least 20 steals was on Nov. 20, 2022 against McNeese State when they totaled 25 steals.
- This is the ninth game this season that the Buckeye defense has forced at least 20 turnovers. The defensive unit did so in the first half on the way to 32 GVSU turnovers total. This is the most turnovers OSU's defense has forced this season.
- The last time Ohio State forced 30+ turnovers was also against McNeese State last season when the Buckeye defense forced 38.
