COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior JJ Tracy and sophomore Jack Anthrop both made runs to the semifinals this week of the ITA Fall National Championship at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Deigo, Calif.
Sophomore Alexander Bernard also reached the round of 16 in singles while Tracy and Robert Cash teamed to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.
Anthrop opened his week with a solid 6-4, 7-6(7) win over Denver's Danile Sancho Arbizu and then bested Michigan's No. 31 ranked Gavin Young 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday. That was Anthrop's third win over a Wolverine this fall. He then advanced to the semifinals with another straight-set victory, 6-2, 7-6(8) over South Florida's Alvin Tudorica.
In the semis on Saturday, Anthrop took on TCU's Jack Pinnington and came out quick, winning the opening set 6-2. But the No. 21-ranked Horned Frog came back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-3 to take the match and advance. Anthrop finished his fall with a team-high 12 singles wins and also added five doubles victories.
Tracy opened with a pair of easy straight-set victories, beating Memphis's Pau Fanlo 6-2, 6-4 and Oklahoma State's Alejandro Garcia 6-2, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, he had a great battle with Cornell's Radu Papoe. The two split the first two sets and would play to 5-5 in the third. Tracy then broke for 6-5 and held for the 7-5 victory.
On Saturday, he took on No. 17 Micah Braswell of Texas. The two traded blows into a first-set tiebreaker and Braswell would pull out a hard-fought 9-7 victory. He then used that momentum to win the match 6-2 in the second.
Tracy had a combined 22 collegiate wins, going 10-2 in singles and 12-2 in doubles. He was the ITA All-American Doubles Champion and the ITA Midwest Regional Singles Champion.
Bernard enjoyed a nice opening round win over No. 78 Enzo Aguiard of Alabama 6-4, 6-4 but he then fell to TCU's Pinnington in a three-set match on Thursday 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Bernard finished runner-up to Tracy at the ITA Midwest Regional and also teamed with Tracy to finish runner-up in doubles at the same event.
Cash and Tracy earned their spot this week by winning the ITA All-American doubles title and began the week at the No. 2 seed. The Buckeyes blitzed Nebraska's Nic Wiedenhorn and Anton Shepp 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round and then bested BYU's Zach Fuchs and Wally Thayne 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday. In Friday's quarterfinal, the No. 13 team of Pedro Vives and Sebastian Gorzny of TCU ended the Buckeyes' run with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
