
Bobby Knight Passes Away at the Age of 83

Former Ohio State player and legendary coach Bobby Knight passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at the age of 83, according to his family.
"It is with heavy hearts that we share that Coach Bob Knight passed away at his home in Bloomington surrounded by his family," the Knight family said in a statement. "We are grateful for all the thoughts and prayers, and appreciate the continued respect for our privacy as Coach requested a private family gathering, which is being honored. We will continue to celebrate his life and remember him, today and forever as a beloved Husband, Father, Coach, and Friend."
Prior to his Hall of Fame coaching career, Knight helped the Buckeyes win the only national title in program history in 1960 (team pictured above). He was a three-year letterwinner from 1960-62 and had career averages of 3.8 points and 2.1 rebounds over 74 games. He appeared in 21 of the 28 games as a sophomore during the 1960 championship season, including all four games of the NCAA championship run. He played under head coach Fred Taylor, who Knight credited as one of his role models and mentors.
Knight went on to win three national championships as head coach at Indiana in 1976, 1981 and 1987. His 1976 team is the last team to go undefeated for the entire season. He was a three-time AP Coach of the and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Following his time at Indiana, he would coach seven seasons at Texas Tech at the end of his collegiate career. He amassed 902 wins at the collegiate level, which is second all-time behind his former player and fellow hall of fame coach Mike Krzyzewski. Knight also coached several teams for USA Basketball, including the 1984 Olympic Gold Medal winning team. Â
