Fast Start Propels Buckeyes Past Western Michigan 73-56

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A strong offensive and defensive performance saw Ohio State claim a satisfying 73-56 victory over Western Michigan on Sunday afternoon at the Schottenstein Center.
The team had five players finish in double-figure scoring, led by sophomore Roddy Gayle Jr. and graduate transfer Jamison Battle with 13 points each.
Sophomore Bruce Thornton added 12 points alongside three steals, tying his career-high. Both graduate transfer Dale Bonner and senior Zed Key provided 11 points off the bench for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes got off to a hot start with Battle hitting a three on the opening play of the game which led a ten-point OSU lead by the midway point of the opening half. A 21-5 run under the 10-minute mark, led by Thornton and Bonner, would eventually propel the Buckeyes into the half with a 20-point lead at 41-21. Ohio State knocked down eight three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes and had 14 points off of turnovers.
The Broncos struck first in the second half but were quickly answered by an Evan Mahaffey steal, leading to Gayle Jr. for the alley-oop on the other end, spurring a quick 9-0 run. The Buckeyes were able to maintain separation through a balanced attack that saw five players in double figures by the middle of the half.
The Buckeyes would keep the Broncos at distance for the balance of the game and go on to win 73-56. Ohio State was able to maintain the lead due to a season-high 10 steals that would contribute to 16 points off of turnovers.

- Roddy Gayle Jr: 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, knocking down 1-of-2 from beyond the arc. His eight rebounds are a new career-high. His night was capped off by two fast-break dunks in the first half.
- Jamison Battle: 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting including 3-of-7 for three pointers. He also contributed four rebounds and two assists.
- Bruce Thornton: 12 points on 50 percent shooting for both FGs (5-10) and three pointers (2-4). His five assists would lead the team and add to the 15 overall. The guard's three steals were tied for the most in his career.
- Dale Bonner: 11 points off the bench. He co-led the team with three three-pointers for the game.
- Zed Key: 11 points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting, including knocking down his first three of the season in the first half. His two steals were tied for the most in his career.
- Felix Okpara: Grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds and blocked a season-high four shots. Both were one-off his career high. Okpara has now blocked a shot in 11 consecutive games dating back to last season.
