Ohio State Wraps Up Elite Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing program hosted the Elite Invitational Sunday in French Field House, welcoming a number of top teams to Columbus to wrap up the 2023 portion of the Buckeyes' schedule.

The No. 4 Buckeye men were 4-2 in the event, with wins over Air Force, No. 9 Duke, No. 7 UPenn and Cleveland State, falling to No. 3 Princeton and No. 1 Notre Dame. The No. 5t women notched victories against No. 15 Air Force and No. 7 UPenn, falling to No. 1 Princeton, No. 9 Duke, No. 2 Notre Dame and Denison.

The men are now 16-3 this season and the women are 13-5.

The Buckeye Men
The No. 4-ranked men started the day with a 19-8 loss vs. No. 3 Princeton before downing Air Force, 14-13, No. 9 Duke, 18-9, and No. 7 UPenn, 14-13. Ohio State fell to top-ranked Notre Dame, 16-11, before ending the event with a 21-6 win over Cleveland State.

Men's epee was a team-best 4-2 on the day as a squad, outscoring its opponents, 31-23, and winning its last four matchups. Paul Veltrup led all Ohio State men with 11 wins and fellow epeeist Miles Weiss picked up eight victories. The men's saber and foil squads were both 3-3. Men's saber combined for a 26-28 mark. Luca Fioretto was first for saber with nine wins, followed by Miles Weiss with eight. For the foil squad, Edriss Ndiaye, Solin Li and Ilya Ayupov all posted six wins on the day. The squad combined for a 29-25 record.

The Buckeye Women
No. 5t-ranked Ohio State started the day with a close 14-13 loss to No. 1 Princeton and then defeated No. 15 Air Force, 19-8. The Buckeyes fell to No. 9 Duke, 19-8, and closed out the first session with a 17-10 win over No. 7 UPenn. The women dropped a 17-10 decision to No. 2 Notre Dame and fell to Denison, 14-13, to wrap up the day.

Epee led the way for the Buckeye women, going 4-2 overall with a 33-21 combined record. Yeva Mazur had nine wins, Karina Dyner picked up eight and Montserrat Viveros won seven bouts. Foil was an even 3-3, with the Buckeyes totaling a 32-22 record. Alina Lee led the squad with nine wins and Dasha Myroniuk and Claire Teresa Galavotti each had seven victories. Women's saber was 1-5 (15-39) and Maria Alexe and Katherine Larimer were first with four wins each.

- The first events of 2024 will be the St. John's Invitational Jan. 20 and the Philadelphia Invitational the following day.
- The Northwestern Duals in Evanston, Ill., wrap up the regular season Feb. 3-4.
- Ohio State will host the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships Feb. 24-25 in French Field House in Columbus.
- NCAA action starts with the Midwest Regional March 9 in Detroit, hosted by Wayne State.
