COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State had a great fall on the collegiate circuit and two of its current players are also doing well on the professional circuit. Fifth-year seniors Cannon Kingsley and Justin Boulais each claimed separate doubles titles last week on the ATP Challenger Tour.
Kingsley claimed his first professional title as he teamed with Luis David Martinez to win the doubles crown at the Knoxville Challenger. The duo didn't drop a set en route in the tournament, topping the No. 3-seeded team of Mac Kiger and Mitchell Krueger 7-6(3), 6-3 in the finals. Kingsley also advanced through singles qualifying to earn a spot in the main draw last week.
Boulais picks up his second professional victory as he joined fellow Canadian Juan Carlos Aguilar to win the title at the Calgary National Bank Challenger in Calgary. They received a wild card into the main draw and then proceeded to make the finals by knocking off the No. 2 seeded team of George Goldhoff and Alfredo Perez in a good match 3-6, 7-6(3), 10-7. Then in the finals, the Canadian duo rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Europeans Charles Broom and Ben Jones.
Kingsley has played in seven Challenger events this fall, making the main draw in six of them and he advanced to the semifinals of the event in Columbus in September. He has risen to a career-high of 418 in the current ATP rankings. The win this past week in doubles has also jumped him to a career-high of 425 in the doubles rankings.
Boulais has reached the finals in back-to-back doubles events and is also up to a career-high of 439 in the ATP doubles rankings. He claimed his first professional title by winning the singles title at ITF $25K in Edmonton earlier this month. He beat world No. 232 Aziz Dougaz in the quarterfinals, No. 423 Liam Draxl in the semis and then No. 536 Giles Hussey 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-0 in the finals. He is currently ranked No. 583 in the ATP singles rankings.
