No. 24 Ohio State Falls in Marathon Five-Setter at No. 14 Penn State

The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions played for nearly three hours to decide a winner on Saturday night.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State Buckeyes (6-9, 3-3 B1G) were edged in five sets (23-25, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 7-15) against No. 14 Penn State (12-3, 6-0 B1G) on Saturday evening inside Rec Hall in a battle that spanned nearly three hours.  Â

The first set featured 14 ties and three lead changes, but Penn State earned the 25-23 set win. Ohio State used a run midway through the second set and held off a late Nittany Lion push to even the match with a 25-23 set win. The third set was tight early with 10 ties before a 4-0 OSU run to approach 20 points created the separation the Buckeyes needed for a 25-20 set win. Penn State started strong in the fourth set and earned a 25-21 set win to force a fifth set. The Nittany Lions used a 7-0 run to take a 15-7 victory in the fifth set.

Emily Londot reached 10+ kills for the 14th time this season, leading the Buckeye offense with 16 kills and adding 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. She's now tied for ninth in program history in career kills (1,428) and ranks 13th in career points (1,625). Mia Tuman finished with 45 assists and 16 digs to earn her fifth double-double of the season. Kaitlyn Hoffman surpassed 10 digs for the eighth time in the last nine matches, totaling a career-high 20 digs. Rylee Rader recorded 10+ kills for the second time this weekend by matching her season-high 13 kills, including her 800th career kill. Eloise Brandewie matched her career-high seven blocks in the third set, totaling seven blocks for the third-straight match. Sarah Sue Morbitzer added 10 digs for the back-row Buckeye defense. Chelsea Thorpe had 15 kills, notching 10+ for the fifth time this season.

Ohio State opened scoring and led early before Penn State tied the set at points five through eight. OSU used a 3-0 run to take a 10-8 lead but back-to-back PSU points saw the set tied at 10. The set was tied again at every point leading up to the media timeout with the Nittany Lions up 15-14. A 3-0 run from Penn State gave PSU an 18-15 advantage, forcing an OSU timeout. Ohio State got within one out of the timeout and tied the set at 19 and 21 before back-to-back Penn State points forced a Buckeye timeout. OSU scored the next two points to tie the set at 23 and prompt a PSU timeout. Penn State earned the 25-23 set win.

Mia Tuman opened the second set with a solo block. The teams traded points and saw the score tied four times early before a 4-0 Buckeye run had OSU in front 10-7. Ohio State held the 15-11 lead at the media timeout. Penn State got within two at 16-14 and 17-15 before a 4-1 run from the Buckeyes, including three kills from Londot, increased Ohio State's lead to 21-16 and forced a Nittany Lions timeout. PSU scored a pair before OSU scored a pair as Penn State called timeout again with the Buckeyes in front 23-18. The Nittany Lions responded with a 3-0 run to trim the Buckeye lead to 23-21, as OSU then called timeout. Penn State got within one out of the timeout but Rader sealed a 25-23 set win for the Buckeyes with her seventh kill of the match.
