Ohio State Earns Four-Set Victory Against Illinois Friday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes (7-9, 4-3 B1G) earned a four-set win (25-23, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23) against Illinois (7-10, 2-5 B1G) on Friday evening inside the Covelli Center in the mental health awareness match.

Ohio State took a back-and-forth first set by a 25-23 margin. Illinois evened the match with a 25-18 win in the second set. The Fighting Illini took a five-point lead midway through the third set but the Buckeyes fought back to win the set by a 25-22 margin. Ohio State and Illinois traded runs in the fourth set with the Buckeyes coming out on top by a 25-23 mark.

Emily Londot was the first in the match to reach 10 kills, doing so in the second set and for the 15th time this season. Londot finished with 22 kills, surpassing 20 kills for the sixth time this season. Chelsea Thorpe totaled double-figure kills (10) for the sixth time this season, while Rylee Rader did so for the fourth time. Lauren Murphy finished the match with a career-high three aces.

How it Happened
Illinois opened scoring with the first two points before Ohio State scored the next three. The Fighting Illini responded with the next four points to lead 6-3 early. The Buckeyes got within one multiple times and tied the set at 13 on a block from Londot and Eloise Brandewie, their second of the set. Ohio State took its first lead of the set at 16-15. Illinois used a 3-0 run to take a 20-18 lead, forcing an OSU timeout. The Buckeyes scored the next four points, taking a 22-21 lead and forcing an Illinois timeout. The Fighting Illini responded with a pair of points to take a 23-22 lead before back-to-back Buckeye points put OSU in front 24-23 and the Fighting Illini took a second timeout. Londot sealed the 25-23 set win with her eighth kill.

Ohio State got within two at 10-8 but another 3-0 Illinois run gave the Fighting Illini a 17-11 lead and the Buckeyes called timeout. Illinois increased its lead to as large as 23-15 and then called timeout after back-to-back OSU points. The Fighting Illini evened the match with a 25-18 set win.

After Illinois took a 21-20 lead, Ohio State scored the next three to force a Fighting Illini timeout. The Buckeyes sealed a 25-22 set win on a block from Kamiah Gibson and Rylee Rader.

The set was tied at points 19 through 23 out of the timeout. Ohio State scored the final three points to seal the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
