Team Effort Powers Buckeyes Past Scarlet Knights on Road

Ohio State earned a four-set win in Piscataway on Friday night.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State Buckeyes (6-8, 3-2 B1G) earned a four-set win (25-21, 26-24, 18-25, 25-14) against Rutgers (8-7, 0-5 B1G) on Friday evening in Piscataway.   Â

Ohio State created separation with a 5-0 run midway through the first set, earning the 25-21 set win. The Buckeyes earned a 26-24 set win in the second set after the Scarlet Knights fought back to tie the set late. Rutgers used a pair of small runs midway through the third set to force a fourth set with a 25-18 set win. Ohio State did not trail in the fourth set, cruising to a 25-14 set win to seal the match win.

The Buckeyes had three or more players total 10+ kills for the third time this season. Emily Londot recorded her 1,400th career kill to move up to 10th in program history, also moving up to 14th with 1606 career points. She was the first in the match to reach 10 kills, doing so midway through the second set for the 13th time this season and finished with 20 kills and 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Rylee Rader recorded her 1,000th career point and totaled a season-high 13 kills. Eloise Brandewie had a career-high 11 kills and tied her career-high in blocks (7), while Chelsea Thorpe totaled 10+ kills (11 total) for the fourth time this season. Kamiah Gibson earned her first double-double as a Buckeye with 28 assists and 10 digs. Kaitlyn Hoffman recorded double-figure digs (16) for the seventh time in the past eight matches.

How it Happened
Rutgers opened scoring before back-to-back Ohio State points. The set was tight early, being tied nine times by the time the set was tied at 10. The Buckeyes used a 4-1 run to force a Scarlet Knights timeout leading 14-11. OSU extended its lead to 17-11 out of the timeout amidst three-consecutive blocks. Rutgers called a second timeout after back-to-back Ohio State points made it 20-14. The Scarlet Knights scored the next three points to force an OSU timeout. The teams traded points out of the timeout and the Buckeyes claimed the 25-21 set win on Chelsea Thorpe's fourth kill of the set.

Ohio State scored first in the second set with Londot and Rader each getting two kills to build an early 4-1 lead for the Buckeyes. The Scarlet Knights used a 4-0 run to take a 10-9 lead and force a Buckeye timeout. OSU responded with a 4-0 run to take a 14-11 lead and prompt a Rutgers timeout following back-to-back aces from Rader. The Scarlet Knights got within one out of the timeout before a 3-0 OSU run. The teams traded pairs of points but Rutgers' 3-0 run got the Scarlet Knights back within one at 21-20, forcing a Buckeye timeout. OSU scored the next two points before Rutgers took a timeout. The Scarlet Knights tied the set at 24 by fighting off three set points. A kill from Londot and an ace from Rader sealed the 26-24 set win.
