Â
The Buckeyes move to 2-1-3 on the year (with wins in all three shootouts), with the Mavericks 2-0-1. The squads will close out the weekend series at 8:07 p.m. Saturday.
Quoting head coach Steve Rohlik
"It would have been nice to have been snuck out a there in the end with one of the breakaways we had in the third. It probably came down to deserving a tie. Give our guys credit for battling to the end and getting the shootout win. We just need to bounce back tomorrow and continue to get better."
The Short Story
Buckeye Michael Gildon opened the scoring at 12:56 of the first period, converting off a pass from Davis Burnside from behind the net. Stephen Halliday also assisted on the goal, Gildon's second of the year. Less than two minutes later the Mavericks tied the game with a goal after a faceoff in the Ohio State zone with the teams skating 4-on-4. In the second period, a goal on an odd-man rush put UNO ahead 2-1 at 7:24. Ohio State answered, as Mason Klee crashed the net and put in the rebound of a Dalton Messina shot. Jake Dunlap, who sent Messina into the zone, had the second assist.
Â
The goalies held strong the rest of the way. Ohio State outshot UNO in the third period, 10-8, with the Mavs holding the advantage in overtime, 3-1. For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 36-28 (including 17-11 in the second). Logan Terness made 34 saves in all 65 minutes for the Scarlet and Gray. Ohio State blocked 14 shot attempts. Klee, Brent Johnson, Theo Wallberg, Patrick Guzzo and Damien Carfagna each had two.
Â
Ohio State did not score on three power play chances and the penalty kill was 4-for-4.
Â
In the shootout, there were no goals through the first six rounds. In round seven, Carfagna converted and Terness forced the Maverick to shoot wide, giving the Buckeyes the shootout win.
Buckeye This and that
- Klee's goal was his first as a Buckeye. He is one of 11 Buckeyes with a goal on the year.
- Ohio State has played in three overtime games this season.
- Burnside, Gildon, Halliday and Theo Wallberg all share the Ohio State point lead with five each. Halliday and Wallberg are first with four assists each and Burnside has a team-high three goals. Gildon has a 2-3-5 line.
- Ohio State and Omaha were conference foes for 11 seasons in the CCHA. This is the first series between the teams since November 2019 and the first matchup on Maverick home ice since November 2015.
