Ohio State improves to 13-5 on the season; Big Ten Tournament awaits next
COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a day when Ohio State honored eight seniors, one of the youngest Buckeyes – freshman Brenna Bough – stuffed the statsheet with three goals as Ohio State finished its regular season with a 7-0 victory over Bellarmine. Ohio State is now 13-5 on the season and will be in action next when the Big Ten Tournament opens Nov. 2 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Short Story
Bough was far from the only star on the day for the Buckeyes. Lindsey Roberts, Cameryn Forgash, Julie Rodijk and Jessica Courtright all found the back of the cage in an offensive effort that generated a season-high 34 shots.
Making her 56th career start, Abby Danson stopped the only shot on goal that she faced to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Ohio State scored lone goals in the first, second and third quarters before erupting for four goals in the fourth quarter. Roberts netted the first score of the game 12:10 into the first quarter, followed by a Forgash's tally that came after she caused a turnover in the Bellarmine end 4:05 into the second quarter.
- Ohio State's third-quarter goal was Brenna Bough's first of the day off a Webster assist.
- To start the fourth quarter, Rodijk scored from the top of the circle on a penalty corner to make the score 4-0. Seven minutes later, Courtright followed when she redirected a short past the goal mouth inside the post.
- Bough had the final two goals of the day two minutes apart late in the fourth quarter. Her first was assisted by Courtright and the second came off a pass from Hanna Killeen.
Buckeye This and That
- Ohio State's 13 regular season wins are the most the Buckeyes have compiled in 13 years. In 2010, Ohio State was 15-3 at the end of the regular season and picked up three wins in the postseason while advancing to the program's first-ever NCAA Final Four.
- The Buckeyes also finished the season with a 7-3 record at home. Over the past two seasons, Ohio State is 13-6 in the regular season at Buckeye Varsity Field.
- Ohio State was 9-1 this season against non-conference opponents with the only setback coming at No. 4 Louisville, 2-1, on Sept. 8.
- In her final regular season home game, fifth-year senior Delaney Lawler set the program record for career games started with 88 (since 1995). She topped the mark that was set just one season ago by Emma Goldean, who started 87 career games. Goldean holds the program record for games played with 90.
- Makenna Webster's 19 goals this season are the most by an Ohio State player since Aisling Coyle scored 24 in 2010. Additionally, her 39 points are also the most since Coyle had 55, which also occurred during the 2010 season.
- In addition to finishing 9-1 against non-conference opponents, the Buckeyes were 6-0 at home in those games.
- The eight seniors who were honored after the game were: Leanne Bough, Abby Danson, Ali Gordon, Sarah Richards, Delaney Lawler, Julie Rodijk, Makenna Webster and Megan McKenna.
- Brenna's Bough's hat trick gives her 11 goals and 24 points in her rookie season. She's one of three players with 20 or more points (Webster – 41, Bough – 24, Rodijk – 20).
What's Next
With the regular season now complete, Ohio State will turn its attention to the Big Ten Tournament, which will be held Nov. 2-5 at Phyllis Ocker Field on the campus of the University of Michigan.
The Buckeyes will be off next weekend while the other eight conference teams complete their schedules. Ohio State can finish as high as third or as low as sixth in the final regular season standings. The bracket will be announced on Sunday, Oct. 29.
