No. 13 Buckeyes Drop B1G Opener at No. 7 Michigan

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the first Big Ten game of the season, the No. 14 Ohio State men's hockey team fell to No. 7 Michigan, 7-1, Friday evening in Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The loss was the first for the Buckeyes this season, who are now 2-1-1, while the Wolverines improve to 3-2-0.

The teams will close the weekend series at 7 p.m. Saturday in Ann Arbor, with the game streamed through Big Ten Plus and on Ohio State Radio. The squads will face off in Columbus Feb. 2-3.

The Short Story
Michigan opened the scoring just over four minutes into the contest. Freshman Thomas Weis tied the game for the Buckeyes at 8:17, as he was able to knock a loose puck home for his first career goal. Michigan broke the tie 7:34 into the second and added two more, with one on the power play, before the end of the middle stanza. The Wolverines scored three times in the third for the 7-1 final.

Ohio State outshot the Wolverines in the first (12-10) and second (13-10) periods and Michigan had the advantage in the third (15-8) to end the game ahead, 35-33. Cam Thiesing and Michael Gildon were first for the Scarlet and Gray with four shots on goal each. Ohio State blocked 17 shots, led by Patrick Guzzo with three and six Buckeyes with two each.

The Buckeyes were unable to convert on five power play chances, despite putting 10 shots on net with the man advantage. Michigan was 1-for-3 on the power play.
