Buckeyes finish up the Big Ten portion of their schedule with a 4-4 record
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State's eighth and final Big Ten game was much like their first seven: closely contested. In the end, however, the ninth-ranked Buckeyes dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 10 Maryland on Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field. Ohio State is now 12-5 on the season and 4-4 in Big Ten play while Maryland improves to 12-3 overall (4-1 Big Ten).
The Short Story
Maryland was able to score early in the first and fourth quarters to secure the road win, thanks to goals from Sammy Popper and Maci Bradford. Ohio State countered with a Hallie Brost goal in the third quarter that tied the score at 1-all.
The Buckeyes outshot Maryland 16-10 – including 11-5 in the middle two quarters on the game – and had an 8-3 edge in penalty corners. Terrapin goalie Alyssa Klebasko made six saves while her counterpart, Ohio State's Abby Danson, turned away three shots.
How The Goals Were Scored
- Maryland scored the first goal of the game early in the first quarter, as Hannah Boss passed into the circle to a waiting Sammy Popper, who beat Ohio State goalie Abby Danson to the lower left corner of the cage. That score came 4:33 into regulation.
- The Buckeyes' goal was created with Makenna Webster stole a pass in Maryland's zone and created a transition opportunity that resulted in a shot in the lower left corner of the goal by Brost. It was her third tally of the season and Webster's ninth assist.
- The Terps' second goal of the day, which proved to be the game-winner, came when Maci Bradford redirected a shot by Margot Lawn off an initial feed from Hannah Boss.
Buckeye This and That
- The Buckeyes' four conference wins are the most in a season since 2018. That season, Ohio State finished 12-8 and made it to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament.
- Maryland is the seventh ranked team that Ohio State has faced this season. Four of the Buckeyes' last six games have come against top-16 ranked teams: No. 1 Iowa, No. 16 Penn State, No. 4 Rutgers and No. 10 Maryland.
- Sunday was also Ohio State's annual Pink Game for cancer awareness. Included in the day were video messages from members of the team about family members and friends who had been affected by the disease.
- The Buckeyes will play just one game in approximately the next 17 days before the Big Ten Tournament starts Nov. 2. Next weekend, Ohio State has just one game schedule – on Sunday, Oct. 22 – and then does not play the weekend of Oct. 27-29.
- Today was the ninth one-goal game of the season for Ohio State. They are 4-5 in those contests with wins over Bucknell, Michigan State, Ohio and Iowa.
