COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team has reached the end. The final site. The NCAA Championship. The Buckeyes will start their quest for a third national title on Friday morning as they are one of 30 teams competing this week at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The first round starts for OSU at 10:05 a.m. ET on Friday morning. There will be 54 holes of stroke play before the field is cut in half for Monday’s final round. An individual championship will be crowned after Monday’s round and then the Top 8 teams will advance to match play on Tuesday and Wednesday to decide the team champion.
- Ohio State’s lineup this week is Maxwell Moldovan, Adam Wallin, Jackson Chandler, JonErik Alford and Patrick Schmucking. Marco Steyn is the alternate.
- The Buckeyes finished third at the NCAA Columbus Regional last week to advance past the NCAA Regional for the 11th time since the NCAA switched to the regional format.
- In all, this will be Ohio State’s 47th NCAA Championship appearance. The Buckeyes have won a pair of national titles in 1945 and 1979.
- The last time the Buckeyes played at the NCAA Championship was in 2019. They made the cut for the fourth round and wound-up finishing in 13th Daniel Wetterich led the way that year finishing 19th overall.
- Junior Jackson Chandler enjoyed his best finish as Buckeye at the NCAA Columbus Regional as he finished fourth at 2-under par. Chandler has played in nine events this year and has a 73.15 scoring average with four Top 20 finishes.
- Maxwell Moldovan has paced the Buckeyes all season. He has three wins this spring, including a two-shot victory at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate. The unanimous first team All-Big Ten honoree leads the team with a 70.79 scoring average and has posted 14 rounds in the 60s.
- Adam Wallin is second on the team in scoring at 71.83 and has 10 rounds in the 60s. He earned second team All-Big Ten accolades and boasts eight Top 20 finishes on the year. One of those Top 20 came at the Columbus Regional as he, Moldovan and JonErik Alford all tied for 20th at 2-over par.
- JonErik Alford battled through injuries over his first five years in Columbus, playing in no more than two events in any season. Finally healthy, he is playing great golf this season. He has played in 11 tournaments and has a 73.72 scoring average and three Top 20 finishes. Over 86 percent of his rounds have counted towards the team score and he averages over three birdies per round.
- Junior Patrick Schmucking has been in the lineup all season and he too has three Top 20 finishes this year. He has a 74.0 scoring average and had a stretch of 11 out of 12 rounds where he didn’t score higher than 74.
- As a team, the Buckeyes had a great spring, finishing in the Top 6 in seven of the eight events. That included a win at the Southern Invitational and have had four medalists this spring alone.
- Ohio State has an overall head-to-head record of 91-50 on the season and has gone head-to-head against 18 of the other 29 teams in the field this week.
