COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1/2 Ohio State women’s hockey team earned a shutout in game one of this weekend’s series against Bemidji State, defeating the Beavers, 5-0, Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes (11-1-1, 11-1-1 WCHA) had eight different players tally a point in the game, led by graduate Paetyn Levis and junior Jenna Buglioni with three points apiece.
How it Happened
Ohio State scored its first goal of the game at 10:03 in the opening period. Madison Bizal sent a shot from the top of the faceoff circle inside the Beavers’ zone, through traffic and past Bemidji State goaltender Hannah Hogenson. Sophie Jaques and Jenn Gardiner added assists on the goal, which would end up being the game-winner.
The Buckeyes extended their lead with under three minutes to play in the opening frame on a goal from Makenna Webster. The Buckeyes swarmed the Beavers as they attempted to clear their territory, and Buglioni halted their advance. The Port Moody, B.C. native collected the puck behind the Bemidji State goal and sent it into the slot to Levis. Levis then knocked it to Webster, who sent it past Hogenson at 17:19.
Despite a scoreless second period, Ohio State killed off another penalty and Amanda Thiele made eight saves to keep Bemidji State off the board in the middle frame.
Ohio State lit the lamp three times in the final 20 minutes of action to take game one of the series from Bemidji State. The third period started and ended with goals from Levis, who scored at 4:04 and then again at 15:28. For her first goal, she beat a 2-on-1 to put the Buckeyes up 3-0 on the Beavers off assists from Buglioni and Jamie Grinder. Her second goal was a shorthanded one, as she took advantage of a mishandled puck at the blueline and outskated the Bemidji State defensemen for Ohio State’s final tally of the night.
Buglioni added a goal of her own at 9:13 off assists from Jamie Grinder and Kenzie Hauswirth. Grinder sent a shot on target that forced Hogenson to make a save, and Buglioni was right in front to capitalize off the rebound.
Thiele finished the day with 19 saves for Ohio State. The team blocked 14 shots on the day to earn the clean sheet.
