Three-Goal Third Lifts No. 12/13 Buckeyes to Win over No. 20 Irish

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With the game’s final four goals, the No. 12/13 Ohio State men’s hockey team defeated No. 20 Notre Dame, 5-2, in a Big Ten Conference game Friday in Value City Arena. Tate Singleton led the Buckeyes with three points, including the go-ahead goal in the third period.
The Short Story
Ohio State’s Davis Burnside opened the scoring at 4:18 but the Irish deadlocked the game in the final minute of the opening stanza. Notre Dame scored early in the second and Buckeye Dominic Vidoli answered with a shorthanded goal less than four minutes later. The game remained tied until 12:57 of the third, when Tate Singleton finished a 2-on-1 with Burnside. Just 76 seconds after Jake Wise converted on the power play for a two-goal cushion and Patrick Guzzo added an empty net tally at 18:04 for the 5-2 final. Ohio State, which was outshot 32-26, was 5-for-5 on the penalty kill in the game and 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

The Buckeyes, now 8-4-1 on the year and 4-3-0-0-0-0 in the Big Ten, and Irish (5-6-2, 2-4-1-1-0-0) will close the weekend series at 5 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. How it Happened
- The Buckeyes opened the scoring 4:18 into the game, as Davis Burnside tipped a Scooter Brickey shot from the point, with Tate Singleton picking up the second assist.
- The Irish tied the game in the final minute of the period, with Trevor Janicke one-timing a pass at 19:16 shortly after Ohio State killed a penalty.
- The Irish outshot the Buckeyes 10-4 in the first period, but shots were even the rest of the way, with each team putting 10 on net in the second and 12 on goal in the third.
- Notre Dame took the lead at 3:18 of the second when Fin Williams snuck a shot through from a sharp angle.
- Ohio State did not allow a goal after that, tallying the game’s final four goals.
- Dominic Vidoli tied the game with a shorthanded goal at 6:50. He gathered the puck behind the Buckeye goal and passed up to Singleton, completing the play at the other end with a goal from inside the faceoff circle.
- Ohio State scored three times in the third for the win.
- At 12:57 Singleton finished a 2-on-1 with Burnside to put the Buckeyes ahead. The Irish took a penalty on the next shift and Ohio State took advantage, with Jake Wise tallying at 14:13, set up by Mason Lohrei.
- Patrick Guzzo scored an empty net goal from near the boards at 18:04 to put the Buckeyes up 5-2.
- Jakub Dobes made 30 saves in all 60 minutes for Ohio State.
- Ohio State was 1-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill in the win.

- The Buckeyes are among the nation’s leaders on the penalty kill, stopping 47-of-51 (.922) of their opponents’ chances.
- On the power play, Ohio State is 12-for-53 (.226) this season.
- Wise extended his point streak to eight with his power play goal. He shares the team goal lead with six and is first with 13 points.
- Lohrei has a team-best nine assists.
- Burnside picked up his first collegiate assist, to go along with his team-high tying six goals. It was his second two-point game after two goals vs. Minnesota Oct. 29.
- Singleton had his third three-point game and seventh multiple-point outing in the Scarlet and Gray with a goal and two assists.
- Ohio State was outshot for just the third time this season.
