COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey’s Sophie Jaques has advanced to the voting round of the 92nd annual AAU James E. Sullivan Award. She has been named one of 19 finalists for the award, which is given to the top amateur athlete in the United States.
The voting period for the AAU Sullivan Award opens Oct. 27 and will close at 11:59 ET on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Voting is open to the public and people can vote once per day, through the deadline. The winner of the award will be announced during a ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 8.
Jaques played a key part in leading the Buckeyes to their first national championship in the 2021-22 season. The Toronto, Ont. native led the team in points with 59 for a school record in single-season points by a defenseman, tying the program record for points by any Ohio State player in a season. Not only did she record the most points nationally by a defenseman last season, but she scored the second-most point recorded in 20 years by a true defenseman in Division I women’s hockey.
Even as a defenseman, Jaques was among the highest point producing players in the country last season. She led the Buckeyes with 38 assists on the year and ranked third in the country in points and fourth in points per game (1.553).
On the other side of the ice, Jaques helped the Buckeyes hold their opponents to jus 1.53 goals per game. She finished the year with a nation-leading plus-51 and was on the ice for 94 of Ohio State’s program record 175 goals. She also tallied a team-high 44 blocked shots.
As a result of her on-ice success, Jaques earned AHCA First Team All-American distinction. The WCHA Final Faceoff MVP and Frozen Four All-Tournament Team member was also named the WCHA’s Defensive Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season.
This season for the Buckeyes, Jaques is tied for the most points on the team (12) and already leads the team with three power play goals. She’s recorded a plus-7 on ice this year.
Off the ice, Jaques is an accomplished scholar and active member of the community. Last May, she graduated magna cum laude with a degree in civil engineering from Ohio State. She received a fellowship from the Ohio State College of Engineering and is now pursuing her master’s degree in civil engineering while playing her final year of eligibility for the Buckeyes.
Jaques is also an active member of the SHEROs organization, serving the group as vice president for the past two years. The organization provides a safe space for minority female student-athletes to have open discussions and promote diversity in sport. She is also involved with the 2nd & 7 Foundation, which aims to promote literacy in Columbus.
The combination of her successes in competition, school and the community earned her a top-three finalist nod for the 2022 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. The Patty Kaz is the highest honor in women’s hockey and Jaques became Ohio State’s first top-three candidate for the award. She was also awarded the 2022 Arthur Ashe Jr. Female Sport Scholar of the Year, and honor that recognizes outstanding minority young men and women who have distinguished themselves in their academic and athletic pursuits. She is Ohio State’s first winner of the award.
