COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State once again showed it could play with the nation’s top teams as the Buckeyes went toe-to-toe with No. 6 TCU on Sunday. OSU had a number of chances, but the Horned Frogs capitalized late to pull away with a 4-1 victory.
TCU scored back-to-back goals in the 66th and 69th minutes to take a 2-0 lead. Senior captain Emaly Vatne then scored a beautiful goal to cut the lead in half just a minute later. But as the Buckeyes pushed forward in the wanning moments, TCU took advantage of a couple of one-on-one opportunities to tally two late goals.
The Buckeyes have completed non-conference play at 5-3-0 while TCU remains undefeated at 7-0-0.
How it Happened
TCU’s Lauren Memoly scored the first two goals of the match as she tapped home a rebound in the 66th minute and then finished a cross three minutes later.
But Buckeye Emaly Vatne responded quickly as she corralled a pass in the box from Emma Sears, turned and right-footed a shot into the net for her first goal of the season. That gave the Buckeyes, and the fans at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, a little bit of life.

With just seven minutes to play, the Buckeyes pushed forward looking for the equalizer. That’s when TCU took advantage with a couple of deep through balls and Messiah Bright scored twice in the final six and a half minutes to complete the scoring.
Notes
- Emaly Vatne scored her first goal of the season and the first since she had a hat trick as a freshman vs. Morehead State on Aug. 30, 2018.
- The Vatne goal was just the third goal surrendered by TCU this season.
- Sears now has 12 points on the season with five goals and two assists.
- The Buckeyes just completed a seven-match home stand, the longest in program history. They went 5-2-0 in those seven matches.
Up Next
Ohio State has completed non-conference action and will be in Big Ten play the rest of the regular season. The first conference match will be Sunday, Sept. 19 at Maryland.
