COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman Kailyn Dudukovich headed home a pass from graduate Emaly Vatne in the 89th minute to lift the Buckeyes to a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon in College Park.
The win improves the Buckeyes to 6-3-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in Big Ten play while Maryland falls to 4-3-2 and 0-1-0.
Sophomore Christin Baumbick scored her first collegiate goal in the 42nd minute to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead at the break. Maryland tied the match in the 62nd minute and it looked like the Buckeyes would be playing their first overtime match of the season. But Dudukovich tallied her third goal of the season, and the Buckeyes had a road win in the Big Ten opener.
How it Happened
The Buckeyes played well in the opening half and deserved a goal. That goal ended up coming in the 42nd minute as Kayla Fischer pushed to the endline, crossed in front of the net and the clear attempt found the foot of sophomore Christin Baumbick who buried a right-footed shot to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead.
Maryland responded in the second half as Kori Locksley flicked home a cross in the 62nd minute to tie the match at 1-1.
Neither team was able to generate much for the next 20+ minutes and the match seemed destined for overtime. But Kine Flotre took a ball at midfield, played a little give-and-go with Emaly Vatne on the right wing and then Vatne crossed in the box and Kailyn Dudukovich headed the ball into the back of the net for the game-winner.
