CARMEL, Ind. – Led by three Top 20 individual finishes, Ohio State took fifth on Sunday at the Big Ten Championships at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind. The Buckeyes carded their best round of the championship with a 294 to jump one spot in the final standings.
Individually, graduate Felix Kvarnstrom led the team with a 10th place finish at 8-over par. Kvarnstrom made three birdies and four bogeys in his final round of 1-over 73.
Freshman Maxwell Moldovan and Adam Wallin also had impressive showings in their first Big Ten Championships. Moldovan tied for 13th at 9-over while Wallin finished a shot back at 10-over and tied for 18th. Wallin had it rolling on Sunday. He made three consecutive birdies on holes two, three and four to start the round and then played even-par on the difficult back nine to post a final round 2-under 70. That was tied for the second-lowest round of the day and it was the low round of the tournament for the Buckeyes.
Elis Svard capped his Big Ten Tournament with a birdie on the tough 18th hole to post a final round 76. There were just 13 birdies all tournament on the 18th hole which played very difficult in the breezy conditions.
Jackson Chandler rounded out the scoring for the Buckeyes on Sunday with an 8-over 80. He finished the event in a tie for 48th.
The closing stretch of holes 17 and 18 gave players trouble all weekend and the Buckeyes were no different. Of the counting scores in the first two rounds, Ohio State was a combined 15-over par on the last two holes alone. But on Sunday, the counting scores were just 1-over par including Svard’s birdie on 18.
The Buckeyes will now wait to find out their NCAA Championship fate this week. The NCAA Selection will air live on the Golf Channel at 2 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 5.
