Final Stats: Indiana 4, Ohio State 1 // Season Stats
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana took game one of a four-game weekend series on Friday afternoon, 4-1, as the Hoosiers struck for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth for the victory. Ohio State is now 13-11 on the season while Indiana improves to 12-13.
The Short Story
IU's Emily Goodin pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts but was matched by freshman Allison Smith, who entered the game in the second inning and fanned six over five innings of work. Indiana, however, broke a 1-all tie in the bottom of the fifth inning RBI single by Grayson Radcliffe and an RBI ground out off the bat of Bella Norton that scored Gabby Jenkins from third. The Hoosiers tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth via a Brooke Benson RBI single.
Moments That Mattered
- The Buckeyes were able to generate scoring chances against Goodin, including in the top of the second inning when Ohio State loaded the bases with two outs following a walk by Carley Gaskill. A ground out, however, ended the half inning.
- Ohio State left two more runners on the top of the fourth. The first two batters reached base – Mariah Rodriguez via a single and a walk by Taylor Pack – before advancing on a sac bunt off the bat of Megan McMenemy. Rodriguez stole home in some heads-up base running to tie the game, but the Buckeyes couldn't push ahead as the next three outs were made via a fielder's choice, strike out and ground out.
- After Indiana went ahead 3-1, back-to-back singles from Rodriguez and Pack gave Ohio State two on with nobody out in the top of the sixth. The Buckeyes couldn't capitalize, though, with a fielder's choice, fly out and strike out.
Statistically Speaking
- Ohio State left 10 runners on base, getting seven hits off Goodin and well as working four walks.
- Rodriguez went three-for-three with three singles and scored the Buckeyes' only run of the game. It was her seventh multi-hit game of the season.
- Ashley Prange, an Indiana native playing in her home state, also had two hits in four at-bats.
- Payton Buresch started the game but was relieved by Allison Smith after one inning. Smith walked just one over five innings to go along with her six strikeouts.
- Senior Megan McMenemy started for the first time this season and had a hit in three at-bats.
