COLUMBUS, Ohio – A four-goal effort from Kelsey Reed and a hat trick from Lindsey Epstein weren’t quite enough as the No. 24 Ohio State women’s lacrosse team dropped a 12-11 decision to Johns Hopkins on Friday afternoon at Ohio Stadium.
The Buckeyes are now 1-4 on the season while the Blue Jays picked up their first win of the year and are now 1-3. The teams meet again on Sunday at noon, also at Ohio Stadium. BTN Plus will stream the game.
Reed, a graduate transfer, had the most productive game of her young Buckeye career. In addition to Epstein’s three goals (her second hat trick of the season), Ohio State also had single tallies from Ashley Turner, Nicole Ferrara, Jamie Level and Sophie Baez. Turner finished with a game-high three assists for a four-point outing; she has at least one goal in all five games this year.
The two teams went back and forth over the first 10 minutes of the first half. Turner’s goal at the 18:07 mark gave the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead, and after Hopkins tied the score less than two minutes later, Reed made the score 4-3 in favor of Ohio State at the midway point of the first half. That was the last Ohio State lead in the game, however, as Johns Hopkins scored three times in less than two-minute span from 9:50 to 8:21 to take a 6-4 lead.
Johns Hopkins led 7-5 at halftime and scored the first two goals of the second half to open its biggest lead of the day at 9-5 with 26:43 remaining in regulation. The Buckeyes slowly chipped away at the lead, pulling to within one, 9-8, on a free position shot by Epstein at 22:27. From that point, the Buckeyes and Blue Jays traded goals over the next eight minutes. With Johns Hopkins ahead 11-10, Reed’s fourth goal of the day tied the score at 11-all with 14:37 remaining, but that was the last time Ohio State would find the back of the net in the game.
JHU’s Maggie Schneidereith scored to give the Blue Jays a 12-11 lead with 13:18 to play and Ohio State was unable to find the equalizer for the rest of the second half. Johns Hopkins goalie Kathleen Garvey made two of her four saves in the second half.
The stat sheet was a close as the final score would indicate. Johns Hopkins outshot Ohio State 27-22 and held a 19-17 edge in ground balls. The Buckeyes won 15 of 25 draw controls and made two of five free position shots (JHU was four of nine). Ohio State turned the ball over 20 times compared to 16 for the Blue Jays.
