
Buckeyes Hit the Road for Two Games at No. 8 Maryland

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team heads to College Park, Maryland, for two games against No. 8 Maryland. The Buckeyes (1-5, 1-5 B1G) and Terps (3-1, 3-1 B1G) will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday and noon Saturday, with both games on BTN Plus.

Last Time Out
- The Buckeyes are coming off a bye weekend and last played March 5 and 7 against Johns Hopkins, dropping two one-goal games (12-11, 10-9) in Columbus.
- In the two games combined vs. the Blue Jays, Liza Hernandez led the Buckeyes with six goals and Ashley Turner had a team-best five assists, adding a goal to share the team point lead with Hernandez with six each. Kelsey Reed had four goals and Nicole Ferrara had three goals and two assists for five points. Jillian Rizzo had 16 saves for the Buckeyes. - Jillian Rizzo, the Buckeyes’ all-time saves leader (715) has started 63 of 64 games over her Buckeye career. She is first among active NCAA goalies with 11.09 saves per game and in total career saves, and second nationally with 3.14 groundballs per game over her career, ranking first with 190 career ground balls.
- Rizzo is second all-time in Ohio State history in groundballs, with the leader Regina Oliver, who had 236 from 2002-05.
- Liza Hernandez has 119 goals and 49 assists for 168 points in her Ohio State career, ranking ninth in program history in both categories, and she is tied with Mara Simpson for 10th in assists (49). Hernandez is one back of Tracey Bounds (2000-02) for eighth in points, four behind current associate head coach Gabby Capuzzi (2009-12) for eighth in goals and one behind Laurie Rybak (1996-99) and Rainey Hodgson (2013-16) for eighth in assists. Hernandez has 88 draw controls to rank 10th in school history.
- Riley Ewing has 116 draw controls, tying Baley Parrott (2016-19) for sixth in school history. Oliver is fifth among Buckeyes with 121 from 2002-05.
Buckeyes vs. Terps
- The Buckeyes are 1-5 against Maryland since Big Ten play started in 2015.
- The last matchup was a game in College Park March 16, 2019, a 16-1 Maryland win.
- Maryland is 3-1 this year, with a loss at Penn State (15-13), two home wins over Michigan (17-13, 12-9) and a 9-8 overtime victory at Johns Hopkins.
- Hannah Leubecker leads the Terps with 16 goals and points. Libby May is second with eight goals and 11 points and she and Catie May are first with three assists for Maryland. Lizzie Colson has a team-best 10 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers and is third with 12 draw controls, behind May (18) and Shaylan Ahearn (14).
Buckeye Notes to Know
- Liza Hernandez has been named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. Hernandez is 16th nationally and fourth in the Big Ten in goals, ranking fourth in the conference in points. Among Big Ten players, Hernandez is fifth in goals per game (3.33) and seventh in points per game (3.67), ranking seventh with 6.0 shots per outing.
- Hernandez leads the Buckeyes with 20 goals and 22 points and Ashley Turner and Nicole Ferrara are tied for first with five assists each. Turner is second with eight goals and 13 points and Ferrara is second with 12 points, tied with Kelsey Reed and Lindsay Epstein for third with seven goals each. Reed has a team-best 12 ground balls and seven caused turnovers and Hernandez is first with 20 draw controls, followed by Reed with 18 and Riley Ewing with 13. MK Bonanni is second with six caused turnovers.
- Each of the Buckeyes’ last three games has been decided by one goal.
- Ferrara has 11 points in the last four games combined, with seven goals and four assists. She had her third two-goal game of the season against the Blue Jays March 7.
- Turner had a season-high four points in game one vs. Johns Hopkins with a goal and three assists. She had two assists in the second game vs. the Blue Jays but was held without a goal for the first time this year.
- Jamie Level has at least one goal in five of six games this season and has a point in all six outings. She has six goals and seven points on the year.
- Epstein had her second career hat trick (and second this season) in the first game vs. Johns Hopkins. It was her fourth career three-point game.
- One game after she was held without a goal for the first time this year, Hernandez tied her career high with six goals in the second game vs. Johns Hopkins. She also scored six times vs. Michigan Feb. 21.
- Reed had a Buckeye-career high four goals against the Blue Jays March 5. She also scored four times against Drexel April 12, 2019 when she was playing at James Madison.
