Day 3 Results B1g Championships
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Just three races were held Thursday evening at the Big Ten Conference women’s swimming and diving championships but the first dives of the championship were also performed and the Ohio State Buckeyes continue to lead with rival Michigan lurking in second place.
Senior Kristen Romano won her second race of the championships – the 400 individual medley – with Katie Trace second, and freshman Katherine Zenick scored in her third event already at these championships to highlight the Buckeye efforts. Ohio State continues to lead the championships with 771 points with Michigan next with 650 points and Indiana in third with 530 points.
100 butterfly
It was the young Buckeyes who came through first on Thursday, in the 100 butterfly as three freshman, a sophomore and a junior scored points. Katherine Zenick led the way for the Buckeyes, making the A final and finishing in fifth with a tie of 52.73. Freshman Catherine Russo, freshman Tristan Harrison and sophomore Morgan Kraus all scored in the B final, finishing in ninth, 13th and 14th and junior Amanda Palutsis scored points for the Buckeyes in the C final. And despite Michigan going one-two in the event, the Wolverines only were able to cut 19 points off Ohio State’s 167.5-point lead entering the evening.
400 individual medley
Kristen Romano won the event in a Top 10 nationally time of 4:06.75 with senior Katy Trace right with her in second place in 4:07.90. Romano, who won the 200 individual medley Wednesday evening, is the first in the Big Ten to sweep the 200 and 400 IMs in nine years, or since Allysa Vavra of Indiana did it in 2012. Freshman Kyra Sommerstad and senior Natalia Jaspeado finished in 12th and 13th, respectively, for an 89-point swim for the Buckeyes, who increased their lead to back over 160 points in the event.
200 freestyle
Sophomore Amy Fulmer made the A final and finished in sixth place in 1:46.24. Also scoring for Ohio State was junior Sally Tafuto, who won the B final to finish ninth, and senior Nicole Fye was 19th.
