COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimmers are in a tie for first place following the first two events and the completion of the opening evening of the 2020 Big Ten Conference championships, being held this week at the University of Minnesota. Ohio State has 118 points, as does Michigan, to lead the field into Day 2 on Wednesday.
The defending Big Ten champion Buckeyes could not have had a better start to their evening. The 200 medley relay team of junior Emily Crane, sophomore Hannah Bach, freshman Katherine Zenick and senior Freya Rayner cruised to a first-place effort in a pool and school-record time of 1:34.46. The time was well under the NCAA “A” qualifying standard of 1:36.40. Teams from Northwestern and Michigan joined the Buckeyes on the podium in second- and third-place, respectively.
Ohio State’s 800 freestyle relay team of senior Kristen Romano, sophomore Amy Fulmer, Zenick and junior Sally Tafuto then took third in a time of 7:03.76. Michigan and Indiana went one-two in the race.
Four more finals will be contested tomorrow evening at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center: the 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 500 freestyle and the 400 medley relay.
The diving portion of the women’s championships begins Thursday at Purdue University.
