
No. 24 Ohio State Falls to No. 4 Maryland in Big Ten Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team closed out the Big Ten portion of its 2021 schedule on Friday night, falling to No. 4 Maryland 6-0 on a rainy, wet night at the Maryland Lacrosse/Field Hockey Complex in College Park, Md.
With the loss, Ohio State is 7-10 on the season and 1-7 in the Big Ten while Maryland improves to 13-5 and evened its conference record at 4-4. The game was Ohio State’s fifth in a row against a top-10 ranked team (No. 6 Northwestern, No. 1 Iowa, No. 7 Penn State, No. 3 Rutgers, No. 4 Maryland).
How the Goals Were Scored
- Maryland’s Hope Rose put the Terrapins on top 1-0 with under five minutes to play in the first quarter when she cashed in a Maryland penalty corner for her eighth goal of the season.
- The Terps put two more on the board in the second quarter, via a penalty corner and one off a deflection.
- Riley Donnelly scored the first on a penalty corner 3:03 into the second period and then Mayv Clune extended the lead to 3-0 when she deflected in a Margot Lawn shot.
- Maryland put two more in during the third quarter, first from Anna Castaldo 3:37 after halftime and then again by Kyler Greenwalt, who scored off a penalty corner.
- The Terrapins goals were scored by six different players. Maura Verleg, Emma DeBerdine and Margot Lawn each had two assists.
This and That
- Senior Aaliyah Hernandez got the start in goal. It was her 10th starting assignment of the season and the 49th of her career.
- Senior Emma Goldean played in her 71st career game and started for the 68th time. She’s Ohio State active career leader in both games played and games started.
- Friday was the 17th all-time meeting between Ohio State and Maryland.
- Ohio State statistical leaders were Sammy Stone and Sarah Charley, who each took two shots. Both of Stone’s shots came on goal.
- Hernandez and Abby Danson split playing time in goal. Hernandez made three stops while Danson finished with two.
- Seven of Ohio State’s eight total shots were on goal.
