COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a back-and-forth regular season finale, Saint Joseph’s scored on a penalty stroke with 55 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to pull out a 4-3 victory over Ohio State on Sunday at Ellen Ryan Field in Philadelphia. The Buckeyes finish the 2021 slate with a 7-11 record while Saint Joseph’s is now 14-4.
The statistical stars for Ohio State were Sarah Charley, who had a goal and an assist, and Emma Golden, who scored early in the fourth quarter to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead. Jessica Hourihane also found the back of the cage in the first quarter.
How It Happened
- Saint Joseph’s struck first, getting the game’s first penalty corner less than two minutes into the first quarter to converting when Freke Van Tilburg scored off assists from Cassidy Atchison and Katy Benton. It was Van Tilburg’s team-leading 12th goal of the season.
- Five and a half minutes later, Hourihane was in the right place at the right time to clean up a rebound in front of the cage and score her second goal of the season to even the score at 1-1. An initial shot came off the stick of Sarah Richards and was saved by Robin Bleekemolen, but the rebound trickled out to Hourihane, who was in position to score.
- Ohio State broke a 1-1 halftime tie 2:56 into the third quarter when Sarah Charley found the back of the cage for the fourth time this season. The junior from Worthington deflected the ball past SJU goalie Robin Bleekemolen. Sarah Richards got credit for the assist.
- Three minutes later, SJU once again countered with a goal after a corner thanks to Sol Borensztein, tying the score at 2-all. That’s how things stayed until early in the fourth quarter.
- Emma Goldean broke the 2-2 tie when she tipped in a ball on the corner 3:16 into the fourth quarter to put Ohio State back in front, 3-2. The initial shot came off the stick of Charley, who had the assist on the play.
- With under seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter, SJU’s Cassidy Atchison tipped in a ball on a corner to tie the score at 3-all. Atchison would also convert the penalty stroke with 55 seconds for the game-winning score.
