
New Era of Buckeye Volleyball Starts with a Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's volleyball team, led by Jen Flynn Oldenburg in her head-coaching debut, delivered a thriller inside the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes (1-0, 1-0 Big Ten) took down Maryland (0-1, 0-1 Big Ten) in five sets (25-21, 18-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-13) to open the 2021 season.
Four different Buckeyes recorded double-digit kills for a balanced offensive attack, which resulted in a .223 team hitting percentage. Gabby Gonzales had the sixth double-double of her career behind 16 kills and 13 digs. Jenaisya Moore and Emily Londot tallied 16 kills apiece while Lauren Witte turned in 10 kills and a .400 hitting clip (10-2-20). Kylie Murr chipped in 22 digs and Mac Podraza handed out 51 assists with eight digs, three blocks and two service aces. Adria Powell had a team-high six blocks, followed by Londot (5) and Witte (4).
Maryland's Erika Pritchard posted a double-double (10 kills, 10 digs) and Rainelle Jones had 12 kills and six blocks.
SET 1: Londot registered six kills in the opening set of her Buckeye career. Ohio State scored the first four points and stayed ahead for the remainder of the frame. Kills by Gonzales and Moore wrapped things up, 25-21.
SET 2: After exchanging points early in the rally, Maryland took a 16-12 lead, which forced an OSU timeout. The Terps held on to win the set, 25-18.
SET 3: Maryland called for time as the Buckeyes had a slight 19-17 edge. Out of the break, the score was tied five times before the Terps took the set, 25-23.
SET 4: Ohio State scored seven straight points to go up 7-2 and send Maryland to its bench. The Buckeyes never looked back as they cruised to a 25-15 victory. Ohio State recorded the last four points, featuring back-to-back aces from Josie Vondran.
SET 5: It took seven ties and four lead changes for the Buckeyes to seal the set, 15-13. Podraza's consecutive aces gave OSU a 10-7 lead. Maryland cut the deficit to one but a service error and Londot kill clinched the victory for Ohio State.
