COLUMBUS, Ohio – It all came down to the wire for the Ohio State women's volleyball team as it once again pulled out a five-set win over Maryland (24-26, 25-19, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12) on Saturday afternoon at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes improve to 2-0 (2-0 B1G) while the Terrapins fall to 0-2 (0-2 B1G).
The Buckeyes' statistics were eerily similar to the numbers they recorded in their initial meeting with the Terps as four players had double figures in kills. The squad was led by freshman Emily Londot, who had her first double-double as a Buckeye with a career-high 17 kills and 11 digs. Jenaisya Moore turned in 15 kills and 13 digs for the second double-double of her career while Gabby Gonzales earned her seventh career double-double (11 kills, 16 digs). Adria Powell added 13 kills and tied her career high on four blocks.
Kylie Murr held down the defense behind 18 digs while Mac Podraza distributed 51 assists, her second straight match with 50-plus helpers. Gonzales also had a career-high four service aces and Moore added a season-best three aces to her totals. Lauren Witte chipped in nine kills and Sarah Sue Morbitzer tallied seven digs.
SET 1: Four consecutive points put Ohio State up 17-12. Maryland closed the gap, tying the score at 23-all, before overtaking the Buckeyes for a 26-24 win.
SET 2: Powell hit .714 as she connected on five of her seven error-free swings. After falling behind early, the Buckeyes rebounded to take a 17-14 lead. The Terps burned both of their timeouts in quick succession but could not stop OSU from claiming the set, 25-19.
SET 3: It was an evenly matched frame as the teams tied the score 10 times. A 4-0 Maryland run sent Ohio State to its bench, trailing 21-19. Back on the court, a kill by Witte knotted things up before a kill from Londot and ace by Gonzales earned the victory, 26-24. Witte attacked at a .800 clip (4-0-5).
SET 4: Much like the previous set, it was a back and forth battle but this time it ended in Maryland's favor, 26-24.
SET 5: After the Buckeyes took an early lead, the Terps clawed their way back to tie the score at 12-12. An error, Podraza ace and Londot-Witte rejection clinched the rally, 15-12.
