Buckeyes Drop Series Finale to No. 9/10 Wolverines

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team dropped game two of its series with No. 9/10 Michigan, 5-0, Saturday in Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The win gave the Wolverines (8-6-0, 6-6-0-1-0-0 B1G) a sweep of the weekend series against the Buckeyes (4-9-1, 4-8-0-0-1-0 B1G).
Up next, Ohio State has a second consecutive road series, with two games at Michigan State next weekend. The teams will meet at 4 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 23) on BTN and at a time still to be announced Sunday (Jan. 24). Ohio State radio will carry both games.
Michigan 5, Ohio State 0 – The Short Story
Michigan led 2-0 after the first period, with goals at 2:23 and 8:30, and added three goals in the second – at 8:46 on the power play, 13:13 and 18:18 – for a 5-0 advantage through 40 minutes. The Buckeyes outshot Michigan 14-8 in the third but goalie Straus Mann preserved the shutout. Michigan won the special teams battle, going 2-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Ohio State vs. Michigan
In the First … Michigan opened the scoring on a breakaway goal by Johnny Beecher at 2:23 and converted its first power play chance at 8:30, with Owen Power scoring from the point. Shots were 16-10 in favor of Michigan in the period.
In the Second … The Wolverines notched a second straight power play goal at 8:46 of the second, as Michael Pastujov scored. Garrett Van Whye and Jack Becker tallied at 8:46 and 13:13 respectively, to stretch the lead to 5-0. Michigan had the shot advantage, 13-6.
In the Third … Neither team scored in the third. Ohio State, which had three power play chances in the period, outshot the Wolverines, 14-6, in the stanza.
Shots … The Buckeyes were outshot, 37-30, in the game. Tommy Nappier started and played the first 33:13 for the Buckeyes, allowing four goals on 23 saves. Senior Evan Moyse saw his first action of the season, making 13 saves on 14 shots in 26:47 of relief.
The Buckeyes had 14 shot blocks. James Marooney and Layton Ahac each blocked four attempts, with Grant Gabriele blocking three, to lead Ohio State.
Special Teams … The Buckeyes were unable to score on five power play chances, ending a streak of six straight games with at least one power play tally. Michigan was 2-for-4 with the man advantage. Ohio State is 12-for-47 (.255) on the power play this season, ranking in the Top 10 nationally.
