Buckeyes Fall to No. 9/10 Wolverines, 4-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team fell to No. 9/10 Michigan, 4-2, Friday in the series opener between the teams in Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Buckeyes tied the game at one early in the third, but Michigan scored the next three, with two even strength goals and an empty netter, to stretch the lead to 4-1 at 17:43. The Buckeyes ended the game with a power play goal, Tate Singleton's second tally of the night.
The Buckeyes (4-8-1, 4-7-0-0-1-0 B1G) and Wolverines (7-6-0, 5-6-0-1-0-0 B1G) will close the series at 7 p.m. Saturday in Ann Arbor, with the game televised by BTN and on Ohio State Radio.
Michigan 4, Ohio State 2 – The Short Story
The teams combined for 18 shots on goal in the first period but the game remained scoreless until the 6:47 mark of the second when Michigan opened the scoring. The Wolverines carried the one-goal advantage until Buckeye sophomore Tate Singleton converted on the power play at 3:51 of the third for a 1-1 game. Michigan regained the lead at 10:51 and pushed its edge to 3-1 at 13:13, following with an empty net goal at 17:43. Singleton scored a second power play goal with 11 seconds left for the 4-2 final. The Buckeyes were outshot, 27-21, in the game. Ohio State was 2-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.

"I thought it was a pretty even hockey game. The guys battled all night and we gave ourselves a chance. We need to eliminate some mistakes. We have another opportunity tomorrow night to come back."
Ohio State vs. Michigan
In the First … There were no goals in the first period. Each team had one power play chance and the Buckeyes were outshot, 10-8.
In the Second … The Wolverines got on the board 6:47 into the stanza, when Nolan Moyle forced a turnover at the UM blueline to set up a 2-on-1, scoring from the left wing. Michigan had the shot advantage, 11-6, in the period, and had the only power play chance.
In the Third … The Buckeyes tied the game 3:51 into the third period, as Tate Singleton tipped a shot by Dominic Vidoli on the power play, with CJ Regula also assisting on the goal. Michigan regained its lead at 10:51 on a goal from Brendan Brisson and pushed the advantage to 3-1 with an Eric Ciccolini goal at 13:13. The Buckeyes pulled their goalie with more than two minutes remaining and converted, with an empty net goal at 17:43 for a 4-1 game. With 11 seconds remaining Singleton had his second of the night, assisted by Layton Ahac and Travis Treloar. Shots were 7-6 in favor of Ohio State in the period and the Buckeyes had the only two power play chances.
Shots … The Buckeyes were outshot, 27-21, in the game. Nappier played 57:44 for the Buckeyes and had 23 saves. Ohio State blocked 16 Wolverine shot attempts, with Ahac recording a team-best three and Vidoli, Singleton and Regula each blocking two.
Special Teams … The Buckeyes were 2-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. Ohio State is 12-for-42 (.286) on the power play this year, ranking in the Top 10 nationally.
Noting the Buckeyes … Singleton marked his first career two-goal game … Ahac extended his point streak to five, with a goal and five assists for six points in the streak … Treloar leads the Buckeyes with eight assists and 13 points and has a point in four straight games (2g, 3a, 5p) … Vidoli's assist was his first point as a Buckeye.
