“The end goal is to have 12 qualifiers, two in each weapon and gender. It has been a number of years since we qualified 12 fencer to the NCAA Championships. We have a strong team this year and I think this is well within our grasp. Once we have 12 qualified, we will be in position to compete for a national title, which I am sure we will make a good run at. The team is extremely well prepared with all of the support we have had from athletic training, strength and conditioning, SASSO, compliance, our Sport AD and media relations staff this year.”
LAST YEAR AT THE NCAA MIDWEST REGIONALS
At last year’s event, Ohio State had an impressive showing. On the men’s side, Matthew Comes, Nathan Wreidt, Leon Cao, Will Gaziano, Domenik Koch, Roscoe Swartz, and Hudson Santana all placed. For the women, Gabriela Cecchini, Camilla Rivano, Alexa Laskaris, Alexanne Verret, Natalie Falkowski, Sarah Merza, and Aleksandra Kolmykova and Stephanie Miller placed in the Top 10.
BUCKEYE BITS
- Nathan Wriedt is the only returning Buckeye who earned an automatic bid last year.
- Of the three Buckeyes who placed first at last year’s event, Domenik Koch is the only one returning for the chance at another title.
- Nine Buckeyes attending this year’s regionals competed at last year’s NCAA Championships
- Four Buckeyes competing in regionals are freshmen; all four are international students who represent their respective national teams.
- All six MFC individual champions – Julieta Toledo, Camilla Rivano, Alexanne Verret, Roscoe Swartz, Diego Cervantes, and Henry Lange – hailed from Ohio State and will compete at regionals.
