Buckeyes Jump Up to No. 2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On the heels of knocking-off then No. 1 Texas last Saturday, Ohio State has jumped up to No. 2 in the latest Oracle ITA Men’s Tennis Rankings which were released on Wednesday.
The Buckeyes, who were ranked No. 6 the last three weeks, have opened the year 8-0 which includes the win over the aforementioned Longhorns. The jump to No. 2 was made even better by the fact that their opponent this Sunday, Southern Cal, has assumed to the No. 1 spot. That means there will be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown this Sunday at Noon at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center.
There is also a new No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country and its junior John McNally and freshman Robert Cash. The Buckeye duo took down the then No. 4 team of Christian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito of Texas, 6-4. That was the clinching match for the key doubles point. McNally and Cash are 18-2 overall this year and 5-0 this spring in dual matches. The duo won the ITA Midwest Regional title and also finished runner-up at the ITA Fall Championships in November. They are the first Buckeyes’ doubles team to reach the No. 1 ranking since Blaz Rola and Chase Buchanan in 2012. That was the same year in which they won the NCAA Championship.
There are also four Buckeyes in the singles rankings. McNally leads the group at No. 19 as he jumped up five spots. He has a 15-3 singles record this year which includes a pair of wins over ranked foes so fair this spring.
Freshman Cannon Kingsley checks in a No. 22, Kyle Seelig at No. 31 and James Trotter at No. 70. Kingsley is 6-0 so far this spring and 13-2 overall. He battled No. 13 Christian Sigsgaard into a third set before the team match was clinched. Seelig has been dominant this spring. He’s 6-0 this spring and rolled No. 53 Siem Woldeab of Texas 6-0, 6-2 last time out. Trotter is 13-2 overall on the year and provided a key singles win vs. Texas.
The Buckeyes have a big weekend as they will host No. 23 Arizona State on Friday night and then the big showdown with No. 1 USC on Sunday at Noon.
