No. 10 Buckeyes Fall in OT to Michigan State, 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10-ranked Ohio State men's hockey team forced overtime with a goal in the final minute of regulation, but Michigan State scored at 3:36 of the extra session for a 3-2 Big Ten win Saturday in Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes (0-3-0, 0-3-0-0-0-0 B1G) and Spartans (2-0-1, 1-0-0-0-0-0 B1G) will close the series at 5:30 p.m. Sunday in VCA. The game will be streamed through BTN Plus and on Ohio State radio.
Senior goalie Tommy Nappier had 42 saves in the Buckeye net, just two shy of his career high. After a scoreless first, the Buckeyes opened the scoring on a Grant Gabriele goal at 7:37 of the second. The Spartans answered with two goals before the end of the stanza, with a power play tally at 10:21 and go-ahead goal at 16:08. MSU carried its lead until 19:33 of the third, when Buckeye rookie Travis Treloar scored an extra attacker goal. In overtime, which now begins 3-on-3 across the NCAA, the Spartans netted the gamewinner at 3:36.

"We competed till the end and obviously it was nice to tie it up there with 30 seconds to go, [we] gave ourselves a chance. Once you get to the 3-on-3 it's pretty much a crap shoot at times, you just try to control the puck. We got our chances and their kid scored a nice goal there."

In the First … Each team had eight shots on goal and a power play chance in the period, but no goals were scored.
In the Second … Buckeyes senior defenseman Grant Gabriele opened the scoring at 7:37, tallying on a wrist shot in the high slot off an assist from redshirt freshman Michael Gildon. The Spartans' Charlie Combs scored on the power play at 10:21 to tie the game and Adam Goodsir put MSU ahead at 16:08. Nappier had 18 saves in the period, with Michigan State outshooting the Buckeyes, 20-6. Each team had two power plays in the stanza.
In the Third … Down by one with less than seven minutes in regulation, the Buckeyes killed off a five-minute major power play for MSU to keep it a one-goal game and with the net empty in the final minute, Ohio State tied the game. Freshman defenseman Evan McIntyre found classmate Travis Treloar with a cross-ice pass and he scored on a one-timer at 19:33. Nappier stopped all 14 MSU shots in the period and Ohio State put seven shots on net. Both Treloar and McIntyre marked their first point as a Buckeye on the tally.
In Overtime … Each team had chances in overtime but the Spartans prevailed on their third shot on goal, with Nico Muller scoring on a shot from the left wing. Ohio State had one shot on goal in the stanza.
Shots … The Buckeyes were outshot, 45-22, in the game. Nappier played 63:14 and had 42 saves, allowing three goals. MSU's Drew DeRidder made 20 stops in 63:36.
The Buckeyes had nine shot blocks, led by Kamil Sadlocha with two.
Special Teams … The Buckeyes were scoreless on three power play chances in the game and the penalty kill was 4-for-5, including a stop on a full five-minute major.
